Samurai(Japanese warriors) --Country-- Japan --Styles-- KENDO is formed with all style of KENJUTU |
Simply put, Kendo(剣道) is Japanese fencing using bamboo "swords," called shinai, wherein competitors score points by striking certain target areas on their opponent with proper power and form. Kendo is a sport. It should not be confused with kenjutsu, which is the traditional samurai art of swordsmanship. What they did have plenty of were kata, or forms, which are choreographed, rehearsed movements designed to teach the most efficient methods of weapon handling, attack and defense/counter-attack. In matches, points are only awarded when the attacks are done firmly and properly to the allowed targets with good control and a yell (in Japanese) corresponding to the part of the opponent that is being targeted. For example, if the opponent's head is the target, an accompanying cry of "Men" should be bellowed. For an attack to the wrist, "Kote" should be shouted. For an attack to the trunk "Do", and for a thrust at the opponent's throat "Tsuki" should be shouted. The first to score two points wins the match. |
