-What is "KUNG-FU"??-

Nowadays, the most common use of the term kung-fu(功夫) is when referring to Chinese martial arts in general. However, the original meaning of kung-fu is quite different, and is hard to translate as there is no English equivalent. In short, kongfu means "achievement through great effort" or simply virtue. By the way, the more accepted term for martial-arts in China is "Wu Shu"(武術). "Wu" means the lance that stops a hostile attack and lets the people prosper. "Shu" is the Chinese character for skill, knowledge and path. Together these two characters explain the philosophy of "Kung-Fu". In reality, Kung-Fu is a term which describes hundreds of styles of Chinese martial arts. Some examples of Kung-Fu styles are Long Fist, Eagle Claw, and Taiji Quan. Around 13th Century AD Shaolin Kung-Fu had developed and expanded throughout Asia. In Japan it evolved into Karate, and in Korea it was known as Tae kwon-do. Kung-Fu developed into many different styles. All current styles are off shoots of the original Shaolin Kung Fu from Southern China. There are various philosophies around the term kung fu, suggesting a deeper meaning. For a process to truly be kung fu, the following three elements must be present: Motivation, Self-discipline, Time.
