Ray graduated from Amity High School, College Springs, IA, where he participated in sports, music and was salutatorian for his class of 1928. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1934 with a B.S. degree in agriculture with an emphasis in agricultural journalism. He taught secondary school for four years in Correctionville, Iowa. In 1938, Ray began his journalism career as a livestock market reporter for the Journal Stockman in Omaha, Nebraska, one of the Corn Belt dailies. Thereafter, he worked as an extension editor for the University of Nebraska and Iowa State University. He also broadcast farm reports on radio in Lincoln. After helping his father on the family farm for a year, Ray accepted a position with Oklahoma State University in 1945. He was assistant, then associate, editor with the experiment station for 30 years at OSU. In 1955-57 he took a leave with his family to Ethiopia where he was an editor for the OSU-USAID College of Agriculture program. He retired from OSU in 1975. He continued his lifelong hobbies of reading, attending sports events, freely corresponding with family and friends, compiling family history, and traveling in the U.S. His last foreign trip was to Hong Kong in 1991. He died at age 88.

"Gabby" as he was known, joined the Army in 1930 and served in the Fourth Cavalry at Fort Meade, SD. After the service, he was the fieldman for the South Dakota Department of School and Public Land. In 1953, he also started selling insurance. He retired to Horatio, Arkansas. He died at age 85.
Gabby married Mary ESTES in 1938. Mary died before 1996.
