Dr. Seward, who is in love with Lucy but knows her heart belongs to Quincey Holmwood, is treating Lucy for a mysterious loss of blood but she seems to be getting worse instead of better. Dracula pays her another visit. Seward decides to call in his friend and former professor, Dr. Van Helsing, to help him try to nurse Lucy back to health.
Van Helsing arrives and examines Lucy. He notices the marks on her neck. He tells Dr. Seward and Quincey that if they don't want Lucy to die that they must do as he asks and not question his methods. Lucy is first given a blood transfusion. A garlic wreath is placed around Lucy's neck and bits of garlic placed all around Lucy's room.
During the night, Mrs. Westenra looks in on Lucy and smelling the strong odor of the garlic, and not knowing of Dr. Van Helsing's orders, removes the wreath from her neck and opens the window. Just then, a wolf appears outside the window and Lucy's mother has a heart attack and dies. Dracula enters the room as mist and then drinks more of Lucy's blood. When morning comes, Dr. Van Helsing and Dr. Seward find Lucy very near death; Van Helsing also finds that Lucy's image is vanishing in the mirror nearby. Quincey is called in to say goodbye to Lucy, who is dying. As Quincey goes to kiss Lucy, she tries to bite him on the neck!
