Some correspondence from Spain
(Some day I may HTML-ize this file. Maybe. Or not?. . .)
= = = = = = = = = What started it in Oct 1998 = = = = = =
I did a search of names on the internet. Then, I sent a letter to
all of the Grolemunds and Grolimunds that I could find. I asked where
they got such a strange name, and some other dumb questions. Then it
was a while before I started to get a few answers. I had done the
same thing a few years earlier, with only a few responses, and nothing
much came of it. As Stephan from Paris wrote to me for the second
time, "The man to contact is Alois in Switzerland." I should have
started this project earlier, but other priorities interfered at the
time. And I had lost Stephan's message on an old computer. Anyway,
here now is history of the Spanish Connection to whom I passed on the
French Connection's advice that we should contact the Swiss Connection.
= = = = This was not the first response, = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Hi Carlos.
Thanks for the response. I didn't get very many answers to my call
to all the Grolimunds and Grolemunds on the internet. But I did
get a second mailing from Stephan in Paris who gave me the address
of Alois in Switzerland. Alois is doing research on the name. I
haven't written to him yet, but his address is:
Mr. Alois Grolimund
Gehrenmatt 532
CH-4616 Kappel SO
Switzerland
Stephan says that he is the person who knows the most about the
Grolimund history.
. . . . .
If I get more information, I will add some history to my web pages at
http://angelfire.com/fl/willnet1/Grolemund.html and see if anyone is
interested in giving the crown back to us.
Best regards,
Bill
Segun mi esposa, yo hablo mucho pero no digo nada.
Ich habe drei Jahre in Deutschland gewohnt.
I also heard from Switzerland from Christoph in Basel
who thinks the name is of a French origin because of
the 'mund' sounding like 'mont.' A mouth or a mountain?

Hi Bill,
I got your message and made a copy for my uncle Paco who
is also doing some research, he is in touch with Alois and
I'll send you the data he has gotten as soon as he considers
it is more or less finished.
By the way, according to my uncle, Grolimund means MUND=mouth
and GROLI means something like angry.
I live in Madrid (Spain). . . .
Best regards,
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for letting me know about your uncle Paco's research. I am
embarassed to say that I haven't written to Alois myself. I don't
have too much to offer, but I can tell you there are hundreds of
Grolemund and Grolimund families in Norte Americano. I am sure
there must be many of them south of the border (Rio Grande River)
from Mexico to Antartica.
On my web site, I included a copy of a letter I e-mailed to a cousin
I had never met who found my name on the internet. His name was
Dan Grolemund and he lived in Fremont, California at the time. I
mentioned in the letter about my talk with an elderly man at the
Hofbräuhaus in München in about 1962 or 1965. He told me that the
name came from the Altdeutsch and that it meant "Golden Mouth."
I remember looking up in a modern dictionary to find that "grollen"
means to complain or growl angrily. Words change their meaning
over years. I wonder how far back Alois was able to trace the
name. Maybe it had an even different meaning at that time.
Give my regards to your uncle Paco. Is that a nickname for Frank?
I guess mine would be a "Memo" for Guillermo or a "Will" for Wilhelm.
In english, we say, "Where there is a will, there is a way."
I look forward to the next news from Madrid in Spain. My wife just
asked me "What are Grolimunds doing in Spain?" Who knows, maybe there
are some of us in India, China, Russia, and everywhere. My answer to
"What are you doing here?" is "Everyone has to be (tener que estar)
SOMEWHERE."
Best Regards,
Bill /// Memo

Hi Bill,
I am enclosing something my wife, Claudia, has been working on.
It is not complete and we must check with tio Paco but I think
you could check it too. [[ NB: This was the first chart. ]]
Hope to hear from you.
I wish you Merry Christmas and a great end of the millenium.
Carlos

Hi Carlos,
I really appreciate that you are sending this information to me.
I will need to install the Powerpoint program to read the chart
you sent me as an attachment. I will convert it to an image for
a web page. [[ - - - some edit to original letter - - - ]]
My wife, Sandy, isn't too interested in genealogy. It is nice of
Claudia to help the Grolimunds in this work. Does she have a
history of the Londono's? My mother's name is German, too, and
I can't trace her side back far either.
I also just saw a note from your uncle, Paco, on my Family Tree
guestbook. I don't look there very often. I will send another
letter to him in a moment. (I will use your address, O.K.?)
Anyway, Christmas was nice here. It is warm in Florida, but it is
very cold in the other States of Norte Americano. I hope all of
the Grolimunds in Spain are having a good holiday season. Also,
have another good year or two before the end of the millenium.
Best Regards,
Bill / Memo
