Drew Barrymore

"I loved playing [Josie] because I can relate to her more when she's in ‘Grossy' mode," she says. This, coming from a woman who once modeled for a series of Guess? Ads? "Absolutely! When she's more attractive [late in the film], I almost feel less comfortable in her skin. I feel like I'm so in touch with what it's like to feel awkward. I can understand that feeling."
- Drew Barrymore, Teen People
Seventeen: Did you go through a geeky stage like Josie does?
Drew: Yeah, I was overweight and awkward and I had braces and I felt like I didn't fit into anything, whether it was my clothes or my skin. I really like when I get to play Josie in the flashbacks, when this girl was really in high school. That's my favorite.

Seventeen: That's when you wear the braces.
Drew: Oh, yeah. And Josie still has pimples when she's older but knows how to cover them up a little. I'm obsessed with skin, totally. I wish I had flawless skin. I feel a zit coming in and I'm kind of upset about it...

Seventeen: What does Josie discover when she goes back to high school?
Drew: She thinks it's going to be different and it's exactly the same, and she sort of as to rework it so that this time it doesn't hurt her as much. There's no formula. It's tough high school.

For Drew Barrymore, who also makes her debut as a film producer, NEVER BEEN KISSED is a labor of love. "I wanted to make this movie because it taps into an emotion everyone can identify with: the awkward moments of our high school years," she says. "For Josie, high school was a horrible, humiliating experience. She completely lacks in social skills, and now, when she has to relive those years by going back, she again misses the mark by a mile."
- Drew Barrymore
TV GUIDE: Is your "Kissed" role similar to what you were like as a teen?
Drew Barrymore:
I was a total Josie. I had braces, I was heavy. I had no pimples, though -- and now I get zits all the time. It's a bummer, because it takes your self-esteem and puts it right in the toilet.
TVG: (To Barrymore) Were you worried about looking dowdy on-screen?
Drew Barrymore: No. The only challenge was when Twentieth Century Fox saw the screen tests. They got really scared, because Josie was very unatractive...
"I know what it feels like to be ugly, awkward and hated by kids your age," says Barrymore, 24. "I went through so many years wondering, 'Will I ever be a swan?"
- Drew Barrymore, People
"I so know what it feels like to feel ugly, awkward, stared at - the freak!"
- Drew Barrymore
