Activities

A Masked Ball

All the animals from Æsop's Fables will be represented at this Masked Ball. Bring your own mask or make one from our materials. If you need a refresher on some of the dances, try the Dance Class on Saturday. Party Masks!

Herbal Identification and Study and The Making of An Herbal

Baron Romas the Mapmaker and Iain McDaniel

sprig of ??? Baron Romas the Mapmaker and Iain McDaniel will collaborate on our increasingly popular Herbal Identification and Study, and give you a chance to make your own Herbal. Take it as a class (The Making of a Medieval Herbal) and enter your Herbal in our contest, or just do it for fun!

Target Archery

Our local artisans have labored long and hard to make entertaining and amusing targets. Come out and destroy them! (The TARGETS, not the artists!)

Mask-Making

For those who wish to participate in the Masked Ball, the theme is Æsop's Fables. If you don't have a mask appropriate to the occasion, come make one with our materials. Help will be provided as requested. All ages welcome!

Theatre

For the Theatrically-inclined, Lillias Stiubhardt has prepared and will be directing a series of short plays, based, curiously enough, on the Fables of Æsop! Rehearsals will be conducted at the Theater down the hill from the Council Ring. Children of all ages are welcome to participate. Remember to take time off to make a mask for your part in the play!

Classes

The Singing of Rounds

Baron Romas the Mapmaker

Anybody who can sing or nearly carry a tune is welcome to learn several rounds from Romas the Mapmaker. Any number from 3 to 30 people will learn a short melody by listening to it being sung or played (no music-reading skills are required). Copies of words will be provided for free, to take home afterwards, so it will help if the participants are able to read. After a few times through the song all together, we will divide into groups of 3 or 4 and start each Singing Moose
group a little later than the preceding group. (It can't be any worse than Star Trek's version of "Row your Boat".) This pattern will be repeated with several songs, such as "Banbury Ale", "He That Will an Alehouse Keep", "I Lay With an Old Man", "My Dame Hath a Lame Tame Crane", "Why Doesn't My Goose", "Wars Are Our Delight" and "Dona Nobis Pacem", among others. These songs should appeal to Brewers, Old Women, Bird-lovers, Fighters and the Clergy, as well as many others. Bring your mug, and some Sekanjabin or other refreshment will be provided. Be warned: many of these tunes are "catchy" and you may find yourself singing them to yourself the rest of the week!

Introduction to Illumination With Wet Media

Iain McDaniel

This class discusses how to use watercolor, gouache, and other water-soluble media to achieve desired effects on illuminated pages - including advice on tools, materials, and technique, and a chance to practice and get help with problems. This is not a class about period technique, but about using modern artistic technique to superficially imitate the style.

Chess

Suleyman al-Rashid ibn-Beyazid

chess We have had a surge of interest in Chess in our fair shire. Come learn the history of this age-old game and get some tips from our very own Suleyman al-Rashid ibn-Beyazid, while he's taking a break from the kitchen.

Newcomers' Class

Veronica MacLaren of Oldenfeld

Feeling new or unsure of yourself? Come join the Newcomers' Class to get the information you need to help you feel more comfortable in the Current Middle Ages.

Dance Class

The musicians of Oldenfeld and their friends will provide music for our gyrations in the dance class and at our Masked Ball. When pigs dance...

Contests

The Battle of the Birds, Beasts and Bats

Beast
The Birds and the Beasts had a battle, but the Bats didn't know which side to join. So they fluttered about trying to help both sides as the battle raged. Their irresolution angered both the Birds and the Beasts, and they joined to drive the Bats from the light of day.
Bird
Will you be Bird, Beast or Bat? Come participate in our Heavy Weapons or our Rapier Lysts and win Honor and Glory for your team and your consort.
Bat

Flattery Contest

A Raven had a piece of cheese in her beak. A hungry Fox came by her tree... If you don't know the rest of the Fable, come and learn it, and then participate in our Flattery Contest. See if you can coax the Ravens to reward you for your flattery.

The Hare and The Tortoise

Tortiose
Everyone knows the story of the Hare and the Tortoise. Will you be the Hare to redeem your ancestor, or a Tortoise to defend Fable history?
