Warcraft I was released in the early 90's by Blizzard Entertainment.
It was one of the first Real-Time Strategy games, and because
of this, a lot of things still had to be worked out. The following define
Warcraft I:
- Town Building and Army Creation - What sets RTS gamse apart
from other games is that a player must build up a town from
scratch and train an army from that. Your army's objective is to attack
and destroy the enemy's army. Both players (or a player
and the computer) build in "real-time" on the same map.
- Storyline - Warcraft invented a compelling storyline set in
medieval times. It is a fantasy game, so there are many mythological
components, such as elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls, wizards, magic, etc.
It was well thought-out and very interesting.
- Orcs or Humans - You may play as either the Orcs or the Humans
in a game. Even though both sides are practically copies of
each-other, there are some differences.
- Awkward Interface - The only real downfall of Warcraft I was
its awkward interface. You cannot right-click to assign orders
to units. Instead you have to hit "M" for move or "H"
for harvest or "A" for attack. Also, to high-light many units
at once, you had
to hold control and drag the mouse. There was no mouse-scrolling, and
you could only high-light four units max at a time.
Obviously playing Warcraft I right now can be awkward and annoying,
especially looking at those early 90's graphics. But it was
a great game in its time, and everyone should have the chance to play
it to appreciate it. You can download the PC demo (only
1.4 MB) at the left-hand menu bar.
