1. My hand are small; please don't expect perfection whenever I make my bed, draw a picture or throw a ball. My legs are short; please slow down so that I can keep up with you.

2. My eyes have not seen the world as yours have; please let me explore safely; don't restrict me unnessarily.

3. Housework will always be there. I'm only little for such a short time-please take the time to explain things to me about this wonderful world and do so willingly.

4. My feeling are tender; please be sensitive to my needs; don't nag me all day long. (You wouldn't want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness). Treat me as you would like to be treated.

5. I'm a special gift; please treasure me as my Creator intended you to do, holding me accountable for my actions, giving me guidelinedd to live by and disciplining me in a loving manner.

6. I need your encouragement, not just your praise to grow. Please go easy on the criticism; you can criticize the things I do without criticizing me.

7. Please give me the freedom to make decisions concering myself. Permit me to fail, so that I can learn from my own mistakes. Then someday I will be perpared to make the kind of decision life will require of me.

8. Please don't do things over for me. Somehow that makes me feel that my efforts didn't quite measure to your expectations. I know it's hard, but please don't try to compare me to my brother or sister.

If a child lives with criticism
He learns to condem

If a child lives with hostility,
He learns to fight.

If a child lives with shame,
He learns to be shy.

If a child lives with tolerance,
He learns to be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement,
He learns confidence.

If a child lives with praise,
He learns to appreciate.

If a child lives with fairness,
He learns justice.

If a child lives with security,
He learns to have faith.

If a child lives with approval,
He learns to like himself.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendships,
He learns to find love in this world.

The Child Within

When life seems more than you can bear
And all you feel is dark despair.
When you find problems everywhere--
Your pain and hurt seems so unfair
Then seek the child within.
If you alone must face the black
For all your friends have turned their back.
They don't have time for you to share,
And no one seems to really care,
Then seek the child within.
When life demands you toil all day,
And you must work your life away--
There is no time to rest or play
And hope seems lost and far away
Then seek the child within.
Remember when you laughed and smiled?
Seek within and find that child.
The time of wonder and discover--
When tears were wiped away by Mother.
A time of jam and peanut butter
A time for sharing with another.
Carousels and laughing clowns,
Painted nose and painted frowns.
New games to play week after week,
First go hide, and then go seek!
And while seeking, look within,
Let the child come out again!
The child within is full of hope--
And always finds a way to cope,
For if today brings only sorrow--
The sun will shine again tomorrow.
Just close your eyes and think of when
You were just a child again,
When hope and promises all came true--
The child within is still with you!

A Child's Fantasy

Beyond the nebulous reality of life
Is the depth of your being to bridge my walk
And create a trance to return to me
To my forgotten other world. . .

Simply known as "A Child's Fantasy"
Once I shed the shroud of proprieties and rigidities
I entered again and forever
The garden of my earlier and happier days

Be with that child
Play with that child

Either in the fantasy of toys and memories
Or even in the solitude of an empty room
Experience the presence of the child's
own magical love
And share within it again

All may have gone unnoticed
Unless I venture to risk
And returned to the child again. . .

A prayer for the Children

We pray for the Children
who sneak Popsicle's before supper,
who erase holes in math workbooks,
who can never find their shoes.

And we pray for those
who stare at photographers from
behind barbed wire,
who never counted potatoes,
who are born in places where we
wouldn't be caught dead,
who never go to the circus,
who live in an X-rated world.

We pray for children
who bring us sticky kisses and
fistfuls of dandelions,
who hug us in a hurry and
forget their lunch money.

And we pray for those
who never get dessert,
who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
who watch their parents watch them die,
who can't find any bread to steal,
who don't have any rooms to clean up,
whose pictures aren't on anybody's dresser,
whose monsters are real.

We pray for children
who spend all their allowance before Tuesday,
who throw tantrums in the grocery store and
pick at their food,
who like ghost stories,
who shove dirty clothes under the bed,
who never rinse out the tub,
who get visits from the tooth fairy,
who don't like to be kissed in front
of the carpool,
who squirm in church and scream in the phone,
whose tears we sometimes laugh at and
whose smiles can make us cry.

And we pray for those
whose nightmares come in the daytime,
who will eat anything,
who have never seen a dentist,
who aren't spoiled by anybody,
who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
who live and move, but have no being.

We pray for children who want to be carried and
for those who must,
who we never give up on and for those
who don't get a second chance.

For those we smother and . . .
for those who will grab the hand of
anybody kind enough to offer it.
