Unknown Student Art

On June 5, 1955 Kenneth and Michael were outside playing. Kenneth came running inside and said Michael had fell out of the swing and was crying. He said, "He held his breath and I beat him on the back." Jimmy and I ran out to see what was going on. He was coming from the Twichell's back yard. They had a swing up there and Michael had jumped out of the swing and hit a stump. There was a pile of leaves there covering the stump and he thought it would be fun to jump into them. It had knocked one of his eye teeth back into the roof of his mouth.

Mama, Papa, Ruby and R.O. drove up about this time and everyone had fits of one kind or another. Michael wouldn't or couldn't open his mouth to let Mama see how bad it was. So, of course, we were on the way to the emergency room. Anyone looking on would have thought it was a fatal thing. Dr. Poe was there when we got to the emergency room. Ruby took charge of Michael. I don't remember who took charge of me! She said Dr. Poe wrapped gauze around his fingers and just reached in his mouth and got the tooth. It bruised the gums something terrible. He told us to have a dentist X-ray to see if the permanent tooth was damaged. Dr. Holloway, the dentist, told us a few years later that when the permanent tooth came in it might come towards the roof of his mouth or his lip. In either case it would have to be pulled. So every night when we said our prayers we would ask the Lord to please let the tooth come in the right place. Those prayers were answered because he didn't have to have that one pulled.

This seemed like such a major thing that it is hard to believe that almost exactly four years later on July 7, 1959 Kenneth would suffer such a terrible disaster just a few yards away! Always at the Twichell's!
