Budgie Info
Hi! You are the
person or bird to read this page.
Okay, I finally did it. I created a page all about budgies just
like Hillary asked me to! Now, put your self in my feet. (I don't wear
shoes) What would write about your own species?! I bet you would write about
useless stuff that no one cares about. Bird's would not. We are much more
intelligent than that! I knew the day was coming when I'd have to sit down
and blab about my kind...so I've planned ahead..so this page will be
exceptionally interesting, possibly humorous, and basically true. Enjoy and
read on!
Simple Facts about Parakeets
-
The title of this section is wrong. Parakeets is our classification.
Parakeets include the budgies, Quakers, and ringlets. If I'm supposed to
write about my kind, the correct title would be....
Simple Facts about Budgerigars
-
From my mistake, you learned something, right? Well...let's move
on. Budgies are from five to seven inches in length.
-
Budgies usually live to be six to nine years old, but there are reports
of some living to be twenty!!
-
Budgies are native to the beautiful land known as Australia. They
lead nomadic lives in the wild. They travel in large flocks, damaging crops,
and enjoying life.
-
The common wild budgie is a little smaller than their domesticated
cousins.
-
Domesticated budgies can be taught to talk, but not all will. Males
have a better reputation for talking than females.
-
To tell the difference between males and females, look at the cere.
If it is blue, it is a male. If it is brown or dark pink, it is a female, like me.
-
Budgies are the most common parrot pet, followed closely behind by
the cockatiels.
-
Budgies are the best animals in the world, by all means, and should
always be loved and cared for by everyone.
Cages
Cages come in all sorts of shapes and sizes,
and some are more decorative then others. My opinion is, to get the largest
cage possible. The minimum size should be 18" by 18". This way we can exercise
our wings. My cage is 31" by 16" by 18", which is a perfectly good sized
cage, especially for three budgies. A pair or singular bird will obviously not need
a cage so large.
Do not have grating on the bottom of the cage. Us budgies hate that. All
though it keeps us away from our droppings, it doesn't allow us to search
for food on the ground, like we do in the wild. The chances of us catching
a disease on the bottom of our cage is slim, if you clean the cage daily.
Please put our home in a lively area in your home. It is unfortunate that
many budgies get so bored they start to pluck out their feathers, as it keeps
them amused. Make sure that you do not place our home in direct sunlight.
If you do, you could open up a store called KFB (Kentucky Fried Budgie).
Don't put us in the kitchen either. The fumes from certain cooking foods
may be poisonous!
In my cage, I have four food bowls, four perches, a swing, a spray millet,
a treat bell, and three toys. This keeps me amused the whole day! In one
food bowl I have my seed mix, in another I have water, in another, I have
grit, and in another I have fresh veggies. Your budgies will probably throw
some food on the ground, because they know you like to vacuum. They do this
every day, even though they don't want to, just to make you happy.
My perches are all different diameters, as they should be. This way I get
to use all of my foot muscles. My perches are placed at least two inches
apart from each other, so I have to use my wings at times. Be sure to place
on perch by the food bowls, if the food bowls don't have a little perch attached
already.
I love to play with toys. The more money you spend on them, the more I hate
them. I will only play with the ones that you make out of shiney objects
you find lying around the house, or the ones you buy for under five bucks.
We love mirrors. They more expensive they are, the more we like to get them
dirty! To keep us from getting bored, buy a collection of toys, and rotate
them, so we have something new to play with constantly.
General Care
Us budgies don't demand a lot. Please be sure to take us out of our
cage at least once a day, if not more, and please give us some attention.
We get very bored sitting hours on end, without anything to do. Providing
us with a buddy usually makes us less bored.
Clean our cage once a day. You can either put grit on the bottom of our cage,
or newspaper. For the bottom of my cage, I have newspaper, with grit sprinkled
all over it. Once a week, wash our perches and toys in lukewarm water. Once
a month, disassemble our whole cage, and scrub it down thoroughly. If you
place our home on a cage stand, be sure to check the bolts regularly, to
make sure our stand doesn't make us fall.
Every day, replace our old water with fresh water. Replace our left over
greens with fresh greens, and blow off the shells of the seeds on top of
our food bowl.
Taming us can be a burden, but read the following pages for info!

Illness
Since I am not an expert, I can't give you remedies for illness.
However, try clicking here . If
you keep our home tidy, and check our plumage daily, and put us in a safe
place, were we won't get bored, we should stay in pretty good
condition
