Here is a list of tips that have helped me over the years.  I hope they help you too.

1.  Air travel - My favorite is Travelocity, the best travel guide on the web.  Find the cheapest fare, includes all airlines, easy and quick to navigate.  Then call your favorite travel agent, give her the dates, times and flight numbers and voila! you are done.  (Don't book over the Internet -- takes too long.  It is faster to call the travel agent, and if you have a problem or questions, the local travel agent is a lot easier to deal with.)

2.  This is an easy one, but important - When in doubt, ask!  You will not be sorry that you did.  If your boss asks you to do something and you can't remember specific details, don't be shy.  Ask!

3.  Never, ever repeat confidential information to anyone in the office, not even your best office pal, under no circumstances, no way, nada, zero, zilch.  You are asking for trouble and placing yourself in a very difficult position.  If your best office pal accidentally mentions something about it to the wrong person in the office, your head will soon be on a platter.  Pack now!

4.  ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, I said ALWAYS, did you get that?  ALWAYS be courteous and friendly to customers.  They have bad days all the time too.  We all have them.  Never take your bad day out on a customer.  One of the most important keys to your success is a friendly personality.  You don't have to be an outgoing person, but you must be friendly.  I supervised two persons in my last job.  I would never hire a person who did not display a friendly disposition in the first interview.  Unfriendly people are always boring and never fun to work with.  They are also chronic complainers.  (You know the person I am talking about, the one who complains about every little bitty thing.  If you gave her a brand new car, she would complain about the color.)  If you deal with a bad customer, put your smile back on for the next one.  Friendly people are A#1 in my book.  If you remember nothing else about these tips, remember this one.

5.  ALWAYS proofread your letters!  Do not rely on the Spell Checker.  It is not perfect either.  There are many errors you will find that the Spell Checker does not catch.  Save yourself from a potentially embarrassing situation.  Proofread your work thoroughly!

6.  Do not refuse to do menial tasks.  You may feel that some jobs are beneath you.  Believe me, they aren't.  No one is better than anyone else.  You may have more experience than the receptionist, but you are not better than her.  If you are asked to fill in for the receptionist, do it.  This not only will help you win big points with the boss, it shows you are what your boss knew all along:  A VERY NICE PERSON!

7.  If you haven't tried this yet, go out and get one today!  This stuff is excellent. Correction Tape!  Remember the old correction tape we used to correct errors on the typewriter?  This is the same stuff, only you can white-out a whole sentence with it.  It is wonderful!  Just press the edge against what you want to white-out and move the tape along to cover your error.  You can then immediately write over it (you don't have to wait until it dries like Liquid Paper) or type over it.  Great stuff, highly recommended.  There are several brand names on the market.  The name of the one I use is Tombow Mono Correction Tape.

8.  Google - I love Google's search engine.  I have used it since it first started.
