Main Page....Eating Disorders....Books on EDs

At Amazon.com, you can find literally hundreds of other titles. These are just the books out there that I have read (**), am in the process of reading (*), or books that other eating disorder patients I've met have said helped them. Some books are of general interest, others are more specific to one or more individual disorders. Please use the submissions page if you have any other book recommendations!

Unfortunately, there are few specifically about ED-NOS out there that I know of (finally found one, though!!!), although many do sometimes refer to "other eating disorders." It might be helpful to read books about the "specified" eating disorder which your own "not specified" one most closely resembles.

Eating disorders in general

  • **Reviving Ophelia by Mary Pipher, Ph.D. Focuses on issues teenage girls face today, including eating disorders
  • **Little Girls in Pretty Boxes by Joan Ryan. Excellent discussion in chapter two about weight, eating, and body issues faced by female figure skaters and gymnasts.
  • **Desperately Seeking Self: An Inner Guidebook for people with eating disorders by Viola Fodor. Great at getting at the underlying issues!
  • **The Monster Within by Cynthia Rowland-McLure. The author mostly focuses on her battle with bulimia, but if you wish to include a spiritual aspect in your recovery, it's definitely worth reading no matter which eating disorder you have.
  • **Hunger Pains by Mary Pipher, PhD. About dieting and self-concept for women (includes in-depth discussion of eating disorders)
  • **Women Afraid to Eat by Frances M. Berg. About breaking free in today's weight obsessed world, contains a segment on athletes which I'm currently reading.
  • **The Secret Language of Eating Disorders by Peggy Claude-Pierre
  • **The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide by Roger Goldingay (talks a lot about female athletes and disordered eating, plus other components of the female athlete triad)

    Eating Disorder NOS

  • **Inside the "Thin" Cage by Constance Rhodes. A must-read for anyone with ED-NOS or any supposed "sub-clinical" eating disorder or chronic dieting.

    Anorexia Nervosa

  • **Anorexia Nervosa: A Guide to Recovery by Lindsey Hall and Monika Orstoff. Great read for both the sufferer and the family
  • **Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia by Marya Hornbacher. A look at the dark side of eating disorders taken to the extremes. Warning: depending how you read the book, it will either deter you from continuing eating disordered behaviors, or it may just be a very bad trigger!
  • **The Best Little Girl in the World by Steven Levenkron (fiction) The "miraculous" recovery at the end is not terribly realistic; the story is continued in the sequel, Kessa, but I've thusfar been unsuccessful in obtaining a copy.
  • **Good Enough: When Losing Is Winning, and Thin Enough Can Never Be Achieved by Cynthia N. Bitter.
  • **Inner Hunger by Marianne Apostolides

  • **Second Star to the Right by Deborah Hautzig
