CLASS REPRESENTATIVE TRACY: This is rather entertaining actually,
I still haven't gotten off the high. Yesterday, Chesterton High School
sent three teams of two to a CAD Competition at Purdue Calumet to face
off against teams of vocational students who use AutoCAD for hours and
hours every day for months, even years. They practice 2D CAD non-stop.
We in our school's technology program, learn the basics of 2D CAD in
9 weeks before we move into 3D Solids and eventually, programs other than
AutoCAD.
Well, after a 3 hour competition, lunch, and a boring tour, we were
told the results. 3rd place went to Alex Hood and Darrin McClane of the
Porter County Career Center (Based in Valparaiso). 2nd place went
to Josh Diehl and Josh Werth representing Merrillville High School (These
students are in a Vocational CAD program). And First Place went to our
very own Matt Zona and Ed Bruce! They lead our school to the first of hopefully
many victories at this annual event. This is also the first annual
competition so our school will have credit for the first win at it.
We aren't too sure how these results were made. We believe it
was an average of the teams' work from the same school because they announced
the places were for the schools, not the individual teams. I won't
try to hide the fact that we would probably have been blown out of the
water without Ed and Zona though. Honest to God, if Mr. Owen was
ever at risk of losing his job, these guys have saved his hide.
But I think that Mr. Owen himself deserves more attention for our win,
after all, he did teach us everything we know about using and applying
AutoCAD. He told us before we started to use what he taught us because,
like with most everything in life, "You will win because you are smarter
than they are."
By the way, the entire CAD Team, consisting of Ed Bruce, Matt Zona,
Ben Doerr, Myself, Mark Fekete, John Christodoulakis, and last but not
least, the Speed Demon, Mr. Owen, is Republican. But, hey, that's to be
expected... We're smart.
