Cookley School
For Ariel View of School Click Here Cookley Sebright Endowed First School is a County school receiving an endowment from the governors of the Sebright Education Foundation. As a First School it takes boys and girls from the ages of 3 until they are 9 years old. The original school was built at the same time as St. Peters Church (1849) on two acres of land purchased from Sir Thomas Sebright. It cost £350 to build and could accommodate 150 pupils. In 1867 a school for older pupils was erected on adjoining land. Many village social events were held at the school until a Parish hall was built opposite the church in 1933. These included Dances, Whist Drives, Parish teas and Community meetings. In 1870, school attendance became compulsory as many pupils were absent when seasonal work was at its height - Blackberry, Pea, Potato and Hop picking were favourite reasons for absence. There were also many illnesses which caused school absence - among these were Croup, Measles, Chicken Pox, Chilblains and Scarlet fever. Formally called the 'Cookley Church Mixed School' it came under state control in 1877. Additional classes were built in the 1960's to cater for the 5-11 age group. During the 1970's the school became the Cookley Sebright Endowed First School and then only was required to take children from the ages of 5 to 9 years. In 1999, the 150th Anniversary of the school, a nursery unit opened in the original Victorian schoolroom, which is also shared with the village playgroup.
