            A Hair Day to Remember!

Approximately 30 African American women representing various backgrounds and proudly wearing an assortment of natural hairstyles gathered together on a very warm sunny afternoon in May to launch the first San Francisco Bay Area Hair Day. Simply Natural by the Bay - Hair Day is a celebration of "natural hair". The day was filled with  laughter, conversation, food, hair care instruction and good ole sistah-bonding. "It was truly beautiful to see so many natural sisters in the same room at one time". This was the sentiment which echoed repeatedly as each woman shared her personal story of why she had come to the event.  Some of the other comments included: "Most of us see very few natural women in our daily interactions in the work place" and "It's not so much what is said but the feeling of isolation you can get when being the only one". "What a sense of peace to be around others who share our journey"The plan is to meet quarterly for informal events and once or twice a year for a more formal gathering.  The next meeting will be in September with a formal event (Holiday Hair/Fashion Show Extravaganza) in December.

My mission is: to help educate African American Women about our hair. I wish to dispel the myths surrounding our hair and the stigma attached to wearing natural hair. Once we know the truth we can better understand our paths. Whatever hairstyle CHOICE you make, (and it should be YOUR choice) you can make it from a place of wisdom.
