Characters
There are many characters, both good and evil, in this game. Some characters are very useful to Squall and help him greatly throughout the game. Some might even turn on him and Squall might find out that the person is a traitor. All the students of SeeD are all very skilled. SeeD is sort of like Soldier, from Final Fantasy VII. Above all, the mission of the game is good against evil. Squall Leonhart and his friends against Edea and her guards.
Squall, a student of the prestigious Balamb Garden. He's a very shy and reserved character. A heavy introvert. Squall often appears cold and uncaring, but in reality, he cares a lot for his love, Rinoa. One example of this can be seen at the dance for the Graduation Ball. Rinoa asked Squall for just one dance, and Squall refused, though he fell in love with Rinoa right there. It was not until Rinoa went over and forced Squall to dance when he finally began to realize it. Squall also seems to have fond memories of his childhood, often having flashbacks to them. He is however, one of the best students of his class. So good that even Seifer Almasy admires Squall...so much so Squall is the mortal rival of Seifer. His weapon is the GunBlade, a twin copy of Seifer's weapon. Squall also seems to have an uncanny connection to Laguna Loire...some say they're the alter-egos...
Rinoa is the kind hearted daughter of a colonel. Very caring and honest, Rinoa is the central character of this story. Rinoa seems to have a crush on Seifer in the beginning...which was a great shock to not only Squall, but to the entire party as well. Rinoa is both competent in both magic and fighting, which makes her a good choice to keep in your party. Though her HP may not be as high as others, her ability for magic makes up for that. Rinoa's weapon of choice is a unique boomerang effect projectile weapon shot from her wrist, called the Blaster Edge. In disc 3, Rinoa gets seriously injured after a fight with Edea and Seifer. Rinoa then goes into a long coma for the majority of the rest of the game...Rinoa also had a crush on Seifer earlier. In battle, Rinoa uses the aid of her dog, Angelo, who helps Rinoa recover, or even attack sometimes.
Laguna Loire is the king of Esthar, a giant city hidden from normal view, and the exact opposite of Squall. Unlike Squall, Laguna is not afraid to show care and concern towards someone. Laguna is married and has a child, Elone, though his wife died. Laguna works as a journalist. Laguna often appears in Squall's flashbacks, of mysteroius circumstances. Laguna's weapon of choice is a gun. Laguna is believed to be Squall's alter-ego. Whenever Squall has a flashback, Laguna takes over. They both also share uncanny connections to each other...Laguna also works with two teammates, Kiros Seagull and Ward Zaback. Later in the game, you will meet Laguna and his teammates in various locations, such as in the Lunatic Pandora, though Laguna nor his friends join your team.
Seifer Almasy has extremely high capabilities, but due to his fiery temper and inability to take orders, he is considered one of the most rebellious students in Garden. Seifer is the mortal rival of Squall. Though Seifer hates Squall, he also recognizes that Squall has great talents, and admires him for it. Therefore, Seifer always desires to fight against Squall in an attempt to prove his highness. The scar on Seifers face happened when Seifer and Squall were fighting, and Seifer pulled the trigger on his GunBlade at Squall when he knocked Squall down. When Squall got up, out of rage, Squall did the same to Seifer, therefore causing Seifer to be scarred in the opposite direction. Despite Seifer's cruel and stubborn ways, Seifer's evilness is not entirely his fault. Seifer was brainwashed by Edea, who was under the control of Altemisia, the ultimate evil. Seifer, unlike Edea, hates Squall till the very end, way up even when Seifer has joined the Galbadian Forces and even the Lunatic Pandora.
Little much is known about Cid Kramer in Final Fantasy VIII, except for his high position at the Garden. Squall and several other characters have a shared past in which they've grown to care and respect him for. Cid's beliefs on the development of Garden soldiers are relatively humane. His students are elite and are feared throughout the Garden.
Edea is one of the villains in the game. Edea is very cruel and cold hearted. She brainwashed Seifer into joining her. Not much is known about Edea, other than she is Cid's wife and the "Mama Sensei" to Squall and Selphie and the rest. She was told a long time ago by someone to create a school of magic. In doing so, her and Cid both created what is now known as Garden. Edea is not entirely evil. Like Seifer, Edea (the Mama Sensei of Squall and the rest long ago), is under a mind control from the evil witch Altemisia. Even more surprisingly, Edea joins your party in disc 3 as a playable character, though only for a short time.
Zell Dincht, another student and friend of Squall. Zell also attends Balamb Garden. Zell is a very energetic person, often getting into trouble. One example is when he rode his airboard around campus. Character wise, he's pretty good. He has good strength with his fists and also posseses a lot of HP. He also shares similarities with Sabin from Final Fantasy VI, in the fact that his Limit uses D-Pad commands to execute. Though not as major as some other characters in storyline, Zell still plays a pretty big part throughout Squall's quest. Zell has a hatred for Seifer, which formed when Seifer called Zell a chicken on the way to their first mission. Zell also seems to be "good" at machinery, since he was able to open up the door at the Underwater Reasearch Facility in disc 3, on the way to Eden, the final Guardian Force.
Quistis Trepe is a very gifted student. Quistis became a SeeD soldier at the age of 15. Many think that she is cool and smart, she also has some weak spots. This is mainly due to the fact that she looks older than she really is. Quistis is a very good member to keep in battle. She has good damage output and is one of the better ones when it comes to magic. She is unique in the sense that her Limits use up Items...and Items in this game are quite rare... Despite that, armed with her Chain Whip and strength, Quistis is one of the better characters in Final Fantasy VIII.
Irvine Kinneas is an expert marksman. Irvine is the playboy of the group, often flirting with women. He has a cool and carefree exterior, often just kicking back. He seems to have some sort of affection to Selphie, as they interact with each other a lot through the game. Irvine's weapon of choice is a shotgun. This weapon is very powerful and has a high hit rate, though it does require maintenance. In order for Irvine to attack, you must have the gun loaded. Without ample supply, Irvine will not be able to attack at all. However, bullets can be made using Ifrit's Make Bullet Menu option. Irvine also has one of the best Limits. His Limit allows you to target as many enemies as you'd like, given that you have enough ammo to support it. The only drawback of that Limit is that it is timed, much like Zell's.
Selphie Tilmett is a naive girl with flightily nature and capable character. A girl with skilled personality to the extent that you can't believe that she's a student at the military academy. Usually she has a carefree way of speaking and is frequently disturbed by the pace of her surroundings.
Ward Zaback is a close friend of Laguna. There was a dream in the game when Squall dreams of Laguna, Ward, and Kiros somewhere during the beginning chapters. They eventually meet each other in the game. All three were soldiers who once served for the Galbadian army. Ward uses a harpoon.
Kiros Seagul is another great friend of Laguna Loire. He uses daggers as weapons and to defend himself.
Fuujin has an eye patch on her left eye. Her weapon looks like a boomerang or a shuriken. She talks with only Kanji. Like Seifer, she brings pressure to students of the Garden. She is stone-faced and close-lipped. Though she looks cold-hearted, she has passion in her mind. She is strong-minded, and looks down on all men, but is devoted only to Seifer. Therefore, she looks on Squall as her enemy.
Raijin is a meaty big man. He has beads on his chest and has a club in his hand. He seems to be poor at thinking deeply and is sometimes deceived or made use of. In a word, he may be undefiled and simple-minded. He is always henpecked by Fuujin. He says one word too many and is kicked by her. As he is devoted to Seifer, he regards Squall with hostility.
