This chase day took place on June 22, 2003. Me and Stephen attended a college world series game that day in Omaha. After the game was over, we headed out to the northwest of Omaha. We headed towards the Columbus area. However, before reaching Columbus, storms began firing southwest of our location, so we began to head south on highway 81 in Nebraska. We then began following the storm that produced the largest hail in history. The hail was reported to be the size of volleyballs. Fortunately for us, we only got into some pea size hail and we took cover underneath a gas station roof. Here are the pictures:
You can see the towering cumulus clouds.
Here is a significant lowering of clouds with the rain to the right just like a supercell thunderstorm.
At this point the wall cloud is being swallowed up by the rain shaft.
Looking off to our north it was pitch dark. This is the exact storm that
spawned the record hail in Aurora, NE.
Another shot looking north into the storm.
Can't see it here, but we could see very significant updraft into the base of
this cloud. There was a lot of updraft in this storm.
Here are some more of the scud clouds.
At this point it was getting dark, but you can still see the lowering of clouds.
The setting sun gave us one more glimpse of the storm.
You can still see the lowering of the clouds, no tornadoes though.
looking to the left of the picture, could have been a developing funnel.
We picked up our first sign of pea size hail in York, NE.
Here is some more of it, we are at a gas station.
