Rolling Credits
I would like to thank all my peers within the “Shipka Spaces” — ENGL 324 "Theories in Communication and Technology," ENGL 407 "Theories of Language in Society," and ENGL 493 "Seminar in Communication and Technology" — for having provided such fabulous well though out frank answers to such a deliberately vague question. We have all proven without a doubt that the “apathy” we feel around us on the campus of UMBC does not exist within the "Shipka Spaces." Without your devotion to the task at hand, none of this would have been possible.

Thanks is owed to Shipka who stimulated the idea of analyzing UMBC student culture. Shipka was a newcomer from a completely different student culture, one that Wikipedia described as a "Rural School" student culture." To say that UMBC student culture was a "Commuter School" culture was insufficient although at first glance, I understood the lexicon, Elizabeth Piccirillo understood also understood the lexicon, hence the word "Apathy," but Shipka egged me on and challenged my pre-conclusions. If it were not for Shipka's challenging me, I would have never pursued the study.

I would like to specially thank Elizabeth Piccirillo who essentially hit the nail on the head one day in the Writing Center when in disgust blurted out the seed word "Apathy," which allowed me to focus on defining the student culture of UMBC. Having attended three other universities; Drexel, Nassau Community, SUNY Farmingdale, I intuitively understood that each university has its own student culture but the term “commuter school” even now seems rather vague as I waltz around the lexicon.

I would also like to thank Jonathan Deane, a fellow Writing Center tutor who showed me a particular entry in the Wikipedia talking about the student culture of UMBC. This information simply fell into my lap as Jonathan’s fascination lied with the latter half of the entry, while the earlier half permitted me to formulate a hypothesis to prove or disprove.

Last but not least, I would like to thank Greg Masters for his thoughtful insight as to how one’s viewpoint changes when one finds themselves inside looking out. I myself was a Writing Center tutor, the Non-fiction Editor of literary arts journal “Bartleby,” and a former reporter for “The Retriever Weekly,” the word “apathy” was far from my mind while working as a team member within these groups knowing that the entire student body wants your input on their writing and waits with bated breath for the next issue of Bartleby and The Retriever Weekly.
