The Abstract · How to Read "This" Objective
"This" de-contextualization and re-contextualization objective provides a brief synopsis of my life through the use of business cards (authorless text). My objective is to weave a tale that many young struggling college students (and many of us beyond our college years) will be able to identify with in a way that should not be told through the strict use of text (passive consumption). The tale is as old as mankind, the "Rocky" narrative (attaining a goal despite all the trials and tribulations one faces.) "This" communication is an exercise in multi-modal communications and is interactive for the consumer. In other words, the reader will not passively read text, but must interact with the text by performing “actions” ("click here to attain me") to receive the communication through the following modes and modalities: audio, video, text, and images. Sorry but I have yet to figure out how to produce smell, touch or taste through a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
The Altered States is a play on words and ideas and encompasses the following:
The reader will be given instructions as to how to interact with this multi-modal communication.
The reader will have to click on the hypertext link underneath the business card using their mouse. Using the Farmingdale Evening College business card as an example, the hyperlink may read something to the effect of “Click here if you feel stressed out. When the reader clicks on the hyperlink, a new window will open providing a brief text explanation of what was happening in my life when I obtained the selected business card. Within these narratives, the user will usually encounter other hypertext links that add multi-modal expalations to the discourse. Some of these may link to You Tube where a song may be played, a video may appear, or any combination there in. Some may be "Easter Eggs" with surprises behind them. Expect the unexpected.
As with the “Re-patent” communication objective, there will be many pages explaining the entire design of the communication.
The hypertext version of "this" communicative objective (CO) can be entered at any point. The "best" way to read the hypertext version of "this" CO is by the traditional reading method of start to finish. Shown below is a listing of how one proceeds from page to page in a linear read.
Enjoy the read.
