BIO:
Scouter is the cub of One-Eye and Clearbrook. He was so named because of his excellent eyesight, as he has the sharpest eyes of all the Wolfriders. Scouter was born years after Cutter, during the reign of Bearclaw. Scouter had a sister, who's name is unknown, who died long before he was born. As a young cub, Scouter learned to respect and honor the safety of his parents and tribemates. When Bearclaw became distant, spending most of his time in the Trolls' underground lair after the deaths of Wolfriders Eyes-High and Shale, it was Scouter who pleaded with Joyleaf, Bearclaw's lifemate, to give the tribe the guidance it so desperately needed: "You can act as chief, Joyleaf. Tell us what to do!"

For most of his life, Scouter had been lovemates with Dewshine, though they never recognized. When Dewshine unexpectedly recognized the Glider Tyldak, Scouter had a difficult time accepting it, but vowed to be a father to her cub (Figure1). At this tender moment, One-Eye and Clearbrook beamed at their young cub whom they'd raised with so much wisdom beyond his years. Scouter still felt like an outsider when it came to Dewshine's cub, so she only asked for his help when she was in labor. This act paid off, as Scouter came to accept the cub, named Windkin, as his own and fought for him like any blood-father would have whenever he was in danger.

After One-Eye's death, Scouter's knowledgeable demeanor seemed to disappear. He became quite overprotective of his lifemate Dewshine and her cub, often becoming intolerant of his own tribemates at times. Skywise has borne the brunt of his rage twice, as has Pike and Ember.

Ten thousand years after the birth of Windkin, Scouter finally recognized Nightfall and Redlance's daughter Tyleet. From their union they had a cub they named Pool. Scouter's overprotective bent was never more active than when Tyleet was pregnant with their son. Dewshine, instead of being jealous of Scouter's Recognition with Tyleet, was joyous, knowing that now Scouter knew the all-encompassing "knowing" within true Recognition. The three elves formed a strong and loving three-mating, voluntarily exchanging soul names.

[I've found that many readers of ElfQuest have a strong disliking of Scouter. And really, I can't blame them. From what I've seen, the elf has become arrogant, overprotective, and pretty much an ass. It is my belief that if One-Eye had lived, Scouter wouldn't have ended up this way. Rather, One-Eye would have shown Scouter the ways of protecting his lifemates and cub while still respecting his tribemates, something Scouter has completely seemed to lack within the years following One-Eye's death. -- LS]
