chapter six
" Whoa!" Rayna said when she first saw Rob on Monday morning. His long brown hair was gone and was now short and spiky.
" Do you like it?" He reached up and self-consciously touched his hair.
" Yeh, you just look….."
" What?"
" You just look a lot like one of my old friends. He moved away a few months ago."
" Is that good or bad? That I look like him?"
She shrugged. " We better go before the bell rings."
He nodded and followed her into the school.
" Hey." Jake greeted Rob as he sat down at their lunch table later that day.
" Hey. Ummm…..Have you seen Rayna around?"
" Yeh, she said she had to go to the library to finish something. Why?"
" She kinda freaked out over my hair this morning."
" Oh." Jake picked up his sandwich and took a big bite.
" What's that supposed to mean?" Rob asked, poking at his own lunch.
Jake held up his finger and finished chewing. " Nothing."
" Well, it must be something."
" It's just that her ex looks a lot like you now."
" Oh."
" Yeh."
" Is he the one that moved away?"
" Yup. They broke up because he moved away."
" Oh. So….they didn't break up 'cause they wanted to, just 'cause they had to?"
" Ummm…pretty much."
" Oh."
That night Rayna pulled into Aubrey's driveway. Their band was practicing with their new singer, Nicky, for the first time in Aubrey's garage. She got out of the car, grabbed her bass from the back seat and went inside. Sam's drum set was set up and she was sitting on the stage talking to Aubrey, who was tuning her guitar. She saw Tom, the guy Aubrey was going out with, sitting in the floor along with Rob and the rest of their friends. She walked to Aubrey and Sam, took out her bass, and began tuning it.
" Rayna, I have very good news!" Aubrey said excitedly.
" What's that?"
" Tom and I are a couple! He asked me to be his girlfriend on our last date!!" She grinned widely.
" That's great!" Rayna exclaimed.
" Yup! Ok, I have more news. I'll let you determine whether it's good or bad."
" Yeh…"
" We're gonna have a very special visitor tonight."
" Who?" She was getting suspicious.
" Chris!"
" Chris?"
" Uh huh."
" Ok." Rayna started strumming her bass.
" Aren't you gonna show a little more enthuasim?" prompted Aubrey.
" Well, this is kinda sudden isn't it?"
" Um, yeh. He just called us this afternoon and wanted to see you…."
" Why didn't he just call me?"
" I dunno."
Rayna nodded, looking sad. " We better start, huh?" she asked quietly.
" Uh, sure." Aubrey plugged her guitar while Rayna plugged in her bass. They began warming up to some stuff Sam and Rayna had written.
A few songs later, Rayna heard a door slam and looked up. Chris was standing there, looking sheepish. They stopped playing to greet him. Aubrey, Sam, and everyone rushed over, while Rob and Rayna hung back. It was a few minutes until Chris was able to get through to Rayna, but when he could, he wrapped his arms around her and they hugged silently. The rest of practice was cancelled for obvious reasons. They hung out and talked with Chris until late.
On his way out, Rob grabbed Rayna's arm. " Can I get a ride?"
" Sure." They walked out to her car in silence. When they had pulled out of the driveway, Rayna sighed.
" What?"
" I hate this."
" What?" Rob repeated, confused.
" Nothing." She sighed again.
" You can't say you hate something and not tell me what it is."
Rayna was silent for awhile. " Why did Chris have to come now?"
" Ummm…. He has a vacation?"
She smiled slightly. " Forget it. We're at you house."
" Um, ok." He got out and turned around, leaning on the doorframe. " Are you gonna be ok?" She nodded. " Alright. Bye."
" Bye." Rayna sighed once more as she pulled away.
