chapter 7

“ Hey.” Rayna looked up from where was sitting on her front porch. Chris was standing in front of her, running his hand through his hair. It was the morning the next day, and it was cool. Rayna wrapped her arms around herself for warmth.
“ Hey.” She replied. “ What’s up?”
“ Nothing much. Can I sit down?”
“ Sure.” She dog-eared the page in her book and placed it behind her.
He sat down beside her. “ I actually wanted to tell you something.”
“ Yeh?”
“ I miss you a lot.”
“ I miss you too.”
“ You do?”
“ Yeh.”
He put his arm around her and pulled her closer. She rested her head on his shoulder, remembering all the times they’d sat like this.
“ So, you don’t have a boyfriend?”
“ No.”
“ You like anyone?”
She pulled away from him. “ Uh....”
“ Oh.” They sat in silence. “ Umm…I have to tell you something else.”
“ What?”
“ I’m moving back.”
She thought this over. “ So we could be together again?”
“ Yeh, if you want.”
She nodded, deep in thought.
“ I’m gonna go now. I’ll talk to you later, ok?”
“ Yeh.”
“ Bye.” He kissed her forehead, then left.

A little while later, she was settled on her bed with her journal. Sighing, she wrote:

Chris came back yesterday. We were practicing when he walked in. I’ve missed him so much. He was with me for almost two years before he moved. He’s moving back. I guess the others knew that, but he didn’t tell me until later. He said if I want us to be together again, we could. What about Rob, though? I was thisclose to telling him I like him, but he cut his hair exactly like Chris’s, and….I really want to get back together with Chris, but I like Rob. I guess I’ll figure it out later.
Ok, so, before band practice yesterday, Talia called me. She wants me to baby-sit for Daniel today. I know she’s my cousin, but I still get mad at her. She was only 17 when she had Daniel with her stupid boyfriend. I love Daniel, though, so I said yes. I always do. I wish they would stop smoking…anything. I’ve told them so many times it’ll damage Daniel, but I guess if a child isn’t enough to snap them out of it, nothing will.
I guess that’s all….More later.

Rayna closed her journal and stuck it between her sketchpads. She pulled on a sweatshirt, then grabbed her bag. It was time to head over to Talia’s.

Rayna stopped in front of the old, brick apartment buildings downtown where Talia and her husband, Josh, lived. She climbed 3 flights of stairs before knocking on their dirty door. Talia answered and let her in.
“ I’m gonna need you for a few hours. I have to go to the doctor’s for my appointment, then to the supermarket, then I have to pay bills.” Talia told her. Rayna nodded, knowing she was being lied to. Talia liked to talk like that but she was way to irresponsible to do that. Sometimes she wondered how Daniel got dressed and fed.
“ Hey Rayna.” Josh appeared before her and handed her Daniel. “ I have to work. See you later.” He walked out of the apartment without saying goodbye to Talia. Rayna guessed they were fighting again.
“ He’s suck an ass sometimes.” Talia sighed. “ I’ve gotta go. See you in a few hours.” Talia was out the door before Rayna could respond.
“ Well, Daniel, it’s just the two of us.” Rayna walked around the apartment surveying the mess. “ Do your parents ever clean? No? I didn’t think so.” She found a portable crib leaning against a wall, broken and forgotten. “ Let’s see…” She murmured to herself. Putting Daniel on the couch, she quickly fixed and set up the crib. Plopping Daniel inside, she did a quick cleaning of the apartment. She found diapers, bottles, and formula and packed them into her bag. Then, she put a coat on Daniel and set off in search of lunch.
