Over the years final Fantasy has made a huge name for itself and the main
way you can tell is when most people think of an RPG one of the final fantasys spring to mind
and half the time all other RPG's are compared to the Final fantasy series like "is it as
good as a Final Fantasy game" and so on. and now with their merge with Enix to form Square-Enix
the series will become strong with the introduction of the star ocean and dragon quest staff. But yet
since Enix has teamed up with Sqaure we havn't seen any great games just squeals so we will have to
wait until Final Fantasy XII to see if the merge was a good idea becasue it will be the first game
that was created my the Square-Enix team.
Final Fantasy Has set the standard for RPG's which the rest of the world will need to
keep up with to sell games but surely the Final Fantasy series will have to end somewhere becasue with
29 titles (36 if you include expansion packs and games with FFF characters in them) you would think they
would have run out of ideas by now but personnaly i think Final Fantasy is like The Simpsons Could you
image life without The Simpsons or the Final Fantasy Games becuase I know i can't.
So to conclude on the history of Final Fantasy The game series was created by square in
1987 and was called Final Fantasy becasue if it failed it would be Sqaures "Final" game.
The game series was a major hit in Japan and was a close competator with the dragon Quest series.
Over the years the games have become more popular and known world wide as the best RPG series ever
and it continues to live up to that name. The series has been so popular is has branched off from
the game world and jumped into films and anime where it failed to create an impression becasue of a
poor story line. Now with its recent merge with Enix (the creator of Dragon quest the rival game to
Final Fantasy) to form Square-Enix they offer a great future to the game series so lets hope they
can keep making these great games even after 18 years of materpieces.
Final Fantasy (1987)
Final Fantasy Was the orignal in the collection and has been released many times for the playstation and the GBA and there has even be rumors of a remake of this game for one of the new hand helds (PSP of DS).
First Final Fantasy was released in 1987 and was called Final Fantasy becasue if it failed to sell enough copies Square would go bust. But some people say that it was the teams final game and they were gonna quit from game making afterwares (they say its on the FFX bonus Disc UK only). |
|
What made this game unique was the fact you could create your own party with different classes and this had never been seen before in an RPG nor the size of the game.
Final Fantasy II (1988)
This was the second game in the collection and was only realeased in Japan and the UK Final Fantasy II in the US was Final Fantasy V. This game was very simliar to the first but had a larger map and you couldn't choose your part at the start you had a set 4 |
|
members, which could talk unlike the first game.
Final Fantasy legend (1989)
This was the first Final Fantasy to go on to a hand held and possibly the first hand held RPG which was good. FFL was different form other hand held RPG's becasue you could select (buy) your party members the game also included a wide range of monster to fight which was |
|
impressive from the little Gamboy Cartridge.
Final Fantasy III(VI) (1990)
Now This game is confusing becasue it was relased in Japan in 1990 as Final Fantasy VI and in the US as Final Fantasy III. But Final Fantasy VI wasn't realsed until 1994 But I can't work out what Final Fantasy III was in Japan becasue it was never relased in the UK so if anyone knows please E-mail me or one of the other staff members of this site (go to the contact us page)
Final Fantasy Legend II (1990)
This was the second game in the legend series and not mich had changedfrom the first part from a new range of monster and skills but apart from that this game is the same asthe first. But even with that was still one of the best RPG's if no the best on the Gameboy. |
|
Final Fantasy IV (1991)
This one of the first games where Square start to experiment. Final fantasy IV was didferent from other Final Fantasy firstly there was 5 people in your party along with a wide range of other playerable characters. Along with the summoning system which hadn't been seen before. |
|
This game also included a wide range of wapons and skills such as the classic Cure 4 etc. This game was also remade for the playstation along with Final Fantasy V (or Chrono Trigger in the US).
Final Fantasy Adventure (1991)
This is one of Final Fantasys unknown titles its was relased for the Gamboy in 1991 and you traveled around the game with your trusty Chocobo. This game is very different form the other final Fantasy becasue it is very much like Zelda with the way you walk around the game |
|
killing varoiu foes with your sword. I think that this was a fun game to play but because not much was known about it at hte time no one took much notice.
Final Fantasy V (1992)
Final Fantasy V is he first Final Fantas Game to allow Jobs/Classes to be changed. This allowed square to create many new Jobs such as blue mage. This also allowed you to have more than one black mage in your party at once this makes the party easier to opitmise before a big |
|
battle. As well as this there were many side quests in this game to allow the player to get more summons or new magic. This game was also one of the Final Fantasy that got remade for the Playstation and is another game that is rumored to be remade again for either the DS or PSP.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (1993)
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was first released in the us in 1992 and then in Japan in 1993 this game has the same battle system and style of gameplay as Final Fantasy adventure just without the chocobo. This game was a very popular game for the SNES becasue |
|
of its Zelda style gameplay. The reason why Final Fantasy Adventure wasn't as popular was becasue of th e lack of public knowledge and the fact at the SNES was the main console at the time. Final Fantasy Legend III (1993)
This game was the last in the legend series and was a big improvement from the first 2 legends games. This game included much more freedom and a larger world map as well as a larger story. There was also a larger number of monsters and skills than the prevoius |
|
games
Final Fantasy VI (1994)
Final Fantasy has been classes as one of the best final fantasys becaue of it long clever story about creatures from other dimensions and magic. This game is one of square greatest becasue of the wide range of playable charcters along with an |
|
intense story of where you end up losing and have to save an already doomed world. with the way square has made many optional characters which you can choose to save of let just them be. Also sqaure created a magic system where each characters learns skills by equiping power espers to themsleves.
Another clever feature of the game is there is no main character there is just a group of main characters. This game was so popular it was remade and relased with the Final Fantasy X demo and also Square used the main characters out of the game to make a mini CGI movie.
Final Fantasy: OVA (1994)
This was the first time Final Fantasy had been made into an anime series and was based on the Final Fantasy V world about 100-200 years after the game. Not much was known about this title becasue it took until 1997 to be realsed in the US and was |
|
never released in the UK. But after watching 2 episodes I found it to be very orignal and is worth watchin if your an FF Fan.
Final Fantasy: CGI (1995)
This CGI demo was released in 1995 to show off the new CGI technolgy. This demo was a short movie based on the Final Fantasy VI characters Locke, Shadow and Terra and was only shown at Game shows in Japan. |
|
Final Fantasy VII (1997)
Final Fantasy VII was the first RPG on the playstation and it was also the first Final Fantasy to use the new CGI technolgy in a game. as well as being set in the future instead of the past. Final Fantasy VII over the years has become more |
|
popular becasue of it nothing short of amazing story line, which will keep you thinking. This game has become so popular spaure has decided to create a load of other games based around this confusing yet amazing story.
Final Fantasy Tactics (1997)
Final Fantasy Tacitcs is a turn based Tactial RPG another first for the Final Fantasy series. This game included all the classic FF features suck as summons and Jobs. This game is one of Squares best because of the difficlutly of the game and the detailed story about a |
|
forgotten hero and the true stroy behind the legend. This game also included a cross over of characters from Final Fantasy VII this was a side quest involving Cloud, Aeris and Sephiroth. along with many other extra characters and the hiring of players and many secerts a side quests this game could keep you entertained for at least 6 months.
Final Fantasy 8 (1999)
Final Fantasy 8 was a very graphical game paning 4 Discs this game had some very detailed CGI scenes which weren't matched by an other game for long time even on PS2 some games didn't have the same graphics. |
|
This game another one of Square orignal battle system with its junctioning system, which is where the player would equip GF's (summons) and then equip magic to their stats to boost there power. This game along with FFVII was also released for the PC. Square also changed all the names of the magic to a more upto date standard it was changed from the classic Fire 1,2,3,4 to Fire, Fira and Firaga.
Final Fantasy IX (2000)
Final Fantasy IX was created to bridge the gap between Final Fantasy VIII and final Fantasy IX but even though it took 1 year to make the graphics pushed the playstation to its limits with breath taking CGI and battle graphics. |
|
Its also the first time the classic crystal has been seen in an FF game since Final Fantasy V and also being set in the past with the return of the the Black mages and other old classes.
Final Fantasy X (2001)
Final Fantasy X was the first Final Fantasy game for the PS2 and there is only one word for the Graphics and thats WOW! this game shocked the world with its graphic proving that a console game could beat |
|
the PC on graphics. This game also had a new battle system with its sphere grid where the player collects sphere in the game to put on there grid to learn new skills and gain more MP and HP. So basically theres no leveling up in this game. another feature was being able to switch party members in the middle of battle to help you defeat the strogest of foes with a range of skills. The sphere grid also allows any characters to learn any skill despite there Job class.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)
Square opened a new section in ther company for this title (Square Pictures) but the Film was terrible the story was poor and the for the Title Final Fantasy the only refrence of FF was Gaia. But on the plus side Square did somthing that no noe has got near to and that create a computer character which could be mistaken for the real thing like my friend Sid on the right. |
|
The graphical Detail of evertying in this film was amazing like the hair each hair was added 1 strand at a time unlike other CGI people where there hair is added in chuncks. and even the skin was mad by taking millions of photos of real skin and coping it to the character.
This project cost Square millions of US dollars and nearly set a multi national Company bust. This title almost lived up to the orignal Final Fantasy game on the NES where if it failed it would be the Final Fantasy.
Final Fantasy XI (2002)
Final Fantasy XI was Sqaure's first MMORPG was has been rated one along side Everquest. This game has been so popular over the years that a comic being published for it. But one big problem with this game was it took too long |
|
be released in the US and the UK (UK release date October 2004) if this game was released eariler it would have been even more popular. Also the $12.50 a month is a bit much for the game considering that Sqaure is in major profit with it.
Final Fantasy Unlimited (2002)
Final Fantasy Unlimited is another one of squares failed TV shows this time it was purly the lack of story the same thing happend in every episode and when it started to pick up speed it was the end so this is only for the real hardcore Final fantasy Fans. |
|
Another thing about this title is it was cut short becasue of the lack of intrest in the series it was orignally supost to be 35 eps long but it was cut short to 25 with no bonus episode to show you what happened afterwards. My personnal favorties in this series were the opening and when omega appears.
Final Fantasy Tacitcs Advance (2003)
First of All whast with the name. I know it makes scene for the US and Japan but in the UK Tactics Advance ? we never had Tactics. well anyway this game sucked. Square seems to be losing there touch |
|
With 3 bad titles nearly in a row. Anyway This was the first FF game on the GBA and the first hand held FF since FFL3 in 1993 10 years before this title. for a GBA game the graphics where nice and the battle system was ok but the rest was poor so pull it togther square and lets get some good games out.
Final Fantasy X-2 (2003)
Now this was a shock the first squeal to an FF game adn the first FF game by Square-Enix. This game was designed to an arcade style game and just plain fun becasuse you already been everywhere in the first game so wahst left to do? |
|
Well for a game with no story and just pointless mission after mission with game was good with its new battle system where your characters run around the field instead of standing in a straight line. As well as being able to switch jobs in the middle of battle made this game fast and fun for all ages becasue it was an easy to follow and play game.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals (2003)
Final Fantasy CC is the only FF game on the gamecube and used the GBA to link up to 4 players for this arcade/Zelda style game. This game is very fun for all ages but its gets old very quick becasue of the story. Becasue the game is split up |
|
into years and each yeah u got out and collect some items then return. Then you do the same next year then the next year and so on. so Square can still make good games its just looks like there out of story ideas (or there saving them for somthing big)
Final Fantasy XII (2005)
Final Fantasy XII Sqaure-Enix's new game which is set in the future with graphics like FFX, which hopfully means they havn't put all there efforts into graphics and worked a bit more on the story. |
|
Final Fantasy VII series (2004-2006)
Final Fantasy 7 Advent children, Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core (no picture) are all spin off of the game Final Fantasy VII. advent chidlren is a 90 minute long film set 2 years after the game. Before crsis is set 6 year before the game when cloud and zack worked together with sephiroth. and Dirge of Cerberus is set around Vincent and what he did in between the end of the game and the film. And lastly there if Crisis Core which should conclude this very long story and hopfully make sense of it. |
|
