Shinji lost his mother at the age of 4 during the First Contact Experiments, the same way Asuka lost her mother. Yui was absorbed by Unit 01. He was there to witness the events while all his father could do is watch with no feelings at all for his lost.
Shinji was abandoned and lived with his teacher until he was summoned by his father to pilot Eva Unit 01. Shinji drifted away during those years. He was bereft of friends due to the idea that those he gives trust in will just destroy him. When Shinji moved to Toyko 3, he is befriended by Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Adia. He also moves in with Misato.
Her additude is simple, she does not accept help and trys to be the best. She looks down on people, never to admit a mistake on her part. She never tries to hurt anyones feelings when she talks because of her pain.
The truth behind Rei is that she is a clone of Yui, either for the Dummy Plug System, which would make her an angel, or for Gendo's desire to see his wife Yui one last time before Third Impact. Either way Rei was chosen by Unit 00. The first Acivition test with Unit 00 ended with great injuries to Rei while the second activation test proved to be successful.
Gendo's social life has not been the greatest either. He met Yui while in college. He got married because of her position at Seele, head of the Human Instrumentality Project. He had no intention of having a family.
Asuka Langley Soryu

Family: Koyko Zeppelin Soryu (Deceased), Grandmother
Asuka lost her mother during the First Contact experiments, in which Koyko lost her sanity and decided to hang herself. Asuka lived with her grandmother. She takes to most pain because she rarely accepts help from anyone, and does not speak about her pain from her mother's death. She could be quite annoying at times.
Rei Ayanami

Family: None
Rei is the hardest to understand because all her files have been erased and she rarely ever speaks. She seems emotionless and does what she is told, like Shinji. She has no friends at all and only seems to speak to Gendo, maybe the only time she is happy. She can seem to be in her own world and does not socailize.
Kaworu Nagisa, aka Tabris

Place of Birth: Unknown, Possible in Seele Headquarters
Family: Dummy Plug System
No much is know about Kaworu other than he is none as Tabris the seventeenth angel. He is able to Sych at any level with any Evangelion unit. He was cloned for the dummy plug system in Seele Evas units. Kaworu was the only person to tell Shinji that he was loved by everyone, yet Shinji has to make a fatal decision, kill Kaworu or face the wraith of Third Impact.
Misato Katsurgi

Misato is Shinji and Asuka's Gaurdian. At home she is pretty much a drunk and slob. She will act more like Shinji and Asuka's friend than parent. At work she is the Major that has control over three Evangelion Units. She works at Nerv to avenge here father's death from Second Impact. Misato has always been close friends to Ritsuko and Kaji. Misato knows how to control a situation, unlike taking control of her house.
Kaji Roiji

Kaji is the type of guy everyone wants to be when they grow up. Yet after Second Impact he has to make a decision to either save himself or his brother. Being more scared of death he chose his life over his brother. Kaji has two jobs, employee ant Nerv and a Spy for the Interior, or Japanese government. Yet he works to find out about Human Instrumentality Project, and also to solve it. Kaji was also going out with Misato when they were in college and tries to re-unite with her.
Gendo Ikari

Gendo Ikari is the Commander of Nerv. Rumor has it that he wanted the death of Yui so he could be commander of Gerhin, Seele, and Nerv. Gendo is not the greatest father because he abandoned his son aswell as would use him for a tool for the future of man. Gendo is strict in his orders, no matter what the cost is to anyone. He has defied the Commitee on numerous actions, actions which include: Using the lance to kill an Angel, Giving his son an Evangelion, delaying the Human Instrumentality Project, and allowing an angel get close to Adam. All of these actions are to accompish the last wish of Yui, to prevent Third Impact.
Yui Ikari

Family: Shinji Ikari, Gendo Ikari
Yui was always happy and was always liked by here co-workers and wanted to have a family. See met Gendo in college because Yui had Professor Kouzou Fuyutski, and Fuyutski would hang out with Gendo and his friends, yet he never got to know Gendo until Gendo was put into jail and Yui Wanted him out. Yui died during the First Contact Experiments with Evangelion Unit 01.
