Dragon Warrior II

Dragon Warrior II is an overall good game with an interesting plot. However, this game can become very tedious and frustrating (to say the least).

THE STORY
WALKTHROUGH

The Story

Long ago, Erdrick the Great was a great hero. One of his descendants defeated the evil Dragonlord and saved the Kingdom of Alefgard. He married the Princess Gwaelin and they rebuilt their land together.

They had three children and gave them each a kingdom to rule. The eldest prince was given Midenhall, the youngest prince Cannock, and the princess Moonbrooke. All three ruled their kingdom peacefully and righteously for one hundred years.

One day, Hargon the Sorcerer attacked Moonbrooke and destroyed just about everything. There was, however, one soldier that got away to give the message of the attack. He walked seriously injured all the way to Midenhall to give his message.

Your quest begins at Midenhal. The king asks you, a descendant of Erdrick, to go out on the quest and bring peace back to the land by defeating the evil Hargon.

You are a great warrior and can use no magic. You can use most weapons and armour. When the quest begins, you are alone. As time goes on, the Prince of Cannock accompanies you. He is a descent fighter and can use simple magic. Later, the Princess of Moonbrooke joins your party. She is somewhat weak but her spells can defeat many creatures. Her healing powers are also quite useful.

During the quest, you collect many useful items. You main goal is to collect the five crests: Sun, Star, Moon, Water, and Life. That helps you to get into Rhone, which is your final battleground.

THE REST OF THE GAME

Starting off and the quest for the Prince
You start in Midenhall. Try not to venture too far until you are in level three to four and keep at least one medical herb per person. Also, buy all the needed weapons and armour.

Go to the town west of Midenhall. Then, in level five or so, go north to Cannock. In level six, go east to the cave. Inside a man will say that the prince recently left. Ignore what he says and venture back to the town west of Midenhall, where the prince will join you on your quest for peace.

Go to the cave west of Cannock to obtain the silver key. Be sure your levels are around nine and seven.

Acquiring the Princess and finding the Cloak of Wind
Next, venture to the monolith south of Cannock. Go to the town. Obtain the Mirror of Ra as soon as you possibly can. It is in the poison (the black stuff that hurts you) east of Moonbrooke. Use the Mirror on the dog in town and she will turn into a princess! This is the Princess of Moonbrooke and she will from then on accompany you on your quest.

Then, acquire the Cloak of Wind in this tower. To reach it, you will need to go up and around mountains. Be sure that you levels are around thirteen, eleven, and seven.

Getting your ship
Once the Cloak of Wind is in your possession, go to the monolith southwest of Moonbrooke. Venture all the way to the tower way north of the exit and go to the port town. Fight some gremlins and obtain your ship.

One option is to retrieve the treasures for this man to obtain the Echoing Flute. Just go strait up and you will encounter some shoals (rocks in the sea). Search there and give him his treasure.

Tantegel
Next, go to the utterly familiar land of Tantegel. In Dragonlord's future castle, you can acquire the Sword of Erdrick. After that is done, go to the monolith south of where Rimuldar should be and take the portal. Walk around the perimeter, search, and get your Sun Crest.

Retrieving the Golden, Jailer's, and Watergate Keys
After that is finished, go 26 north and 15 east of the cave in which you found the man who gave you the information on the whereabouts of the Prince of Cannock. There will be a dog that says, "bow-wow-wow," and then walks away. Search around him to obtain the Golden Key. In the same town, after you have obtained your Jailer's key, go through the poison to the northwestern-most door and you will obtain an item essential to make the Water of Flying Cloth.

In the town where you acquire you Jailer's Key, go to the prison and, in the empty cell, you can walk through the wall to talk to a guy who gives you the Watergate Key.

Go to Midenhall and get the treasures there. You will obtain the Token of Erdrick, which you can exchange with the guy in the monolith south of where Rimuldar should be, for the Helmet of Erdrick. Also in Midenhall, you can do a bit of cheating (well sort of). Fight the Evil Clown downstairs and acquire the Staff of Thunder. It can be sold for 19,500! Get it, sell it, save your game, push in reset-power, start your game, and do it again! However, when you do this, you are not able to obtain any sufficient Experience Points. This will make your game much more tedious, for your guys will end up dying a lot later on. Not to mention the fact that you will need to do much more extra fighting to catch up on the lost Experience Points.

Acquiring the Water Crest, the Moon Crest, the Star Crest, the Water of Flying Cloth, and the Moon Fragment
With all the keys in your possession, you are also able to acquire the Water Crest at Hamlin (the town where you use the Mirror of Ra and get the Princess).

South and a bit to the east of Midenhall, lies the castle of Osterfair. Fight the Saber Lion and get the Moon Crest.

Next, go northwest around the land from the town where you obtained your Jailer's Key. You will pass one river and enter the next to reach a town. There, will can make the Water of Flying Cloth and use the Watergate Key. In the tower, you will obtain the Moon Fragment.

Another crest remains in the tower northwest of Moonbrooke in an archipelago. This tower can become quite tedious, for you go in circles. However, you will eventually run into a man who tells you to follow him. He tricks you and you four Gremlins ambush you. Defeat them and obtain the Star Crest.

The Eye of Malroth and the journey into Rhone
Now, go approximately thirty-two paces west of Midenhall and directly south. You will encounter a cave surrounded by shallow water in which your ship cannot sail. Use the Moon Fragment and it will go away. The cave is a bit tricky and you will fight two Evil Clowns to get the Eye of Malroth in your possession.

Once that is accomplished, head to Rhone. To enter Rhone, go to the town on the southwest continent (Beran) and enter the portal above the House of Healing. Use the Eye of Malroth in the poison by the mountains.

Entering Rhone is a task and a half, to say the least. You will want to fall to the basement to get your Life Crest. After you do that, go to this monolith in the ocean and get the Charm of Rubiss. To get there, travel about twelve paces west of Midenhall and directly south.

Enter Rhone again. On entering, go up three (until you hit the wall), go right three (until you hit the wall), go up six (until you hit the wall), go right two (until you hit the wall), go up two (until you hit the wall), go right one, and then right five (until you hit the stairs). On the second floor, head left to the other screen. In the other screen, go down the third corridor all the way into the new screen. Go down into the new screen again and into the stairs. On the third floor, the stairs are in the up-most path. The fourth floor is probably the most tricky. From the stairs, go down two, left two, down four, right two, down one, and then right one. The fifth floor is loaded with illusions. Go right, left, right, right, up-right, left, up, and right. You are now out of the cave and in Rhone. My levels were at 26, 24, and 20.

There is a monolith in Rhone where you can save your game. The man there will also fully cure your party.

Now, I fight until I obtain every spell for both the Prince and the Princess.

The remainder of the game

Next, I attempt to beat the game (which can take numerous tries). I usually carry a Leaf of the World Tree on me. Once in the castle, it looks just like Midenhall. Use the Charm of Rubiss and that will change. Now, walk up to the barrier, use Stepguard, go all the way left, and use the Jailer's Key. After that, use the Golden Key, go one step up, and use Stepguard. Walk up and use the Eye of Malroth on the square.

You will have to fight three enemies before reaching Hargon. The first is Atlas, who looks like a Giant or Cyclops. The next is Bazuzu, who looks like a Batboon. Finally, you will encounter Zarlox, who looks like a Bullwong. Now, you fight Hargon, who sort of looks like a playing card.

After you defeat Hargon, he says to you, "But there is one even greater than I, a sorcerer of the Shadowtime. A being of pure malice that none shall overcome. I send thee now to meet Malroth."

That was not the last battle. You will fight Malroth. He is quite tough. My levels were at 41, 36, and 30 when I finally killed him.

You hear a voice, "Thou hast delivered the world from Malroth's evil.

"Great is the victory and greater the rewards.

"I, Rubiss, have watched thy struggles and I am proud of thee. "Go now!"

Go to Midenhall and speak to the king. "XXXX, thou art of the line of Erdrick and have proven thy heritage by thy deeds.
"Now is the time for thee to take the throne. Will it be so?"

You will then need to choose "Yes" or "No." However, if you choose "No" the king will call you selfish and make you choose again. I think that it would be more selfish to take the throne than to travel the world and do good. Ultimately, you have to take the throne. You are now the new king, the credits role, and the game is over.
