CDRs Bob Dylan Discs For Trade

Information

OK, here's the list with most information. Yes, it requires tables. The format is:

Title of Disc Label (white for CDR)
date(s) location(s) source(s) ratings (see below for explanation)
# of CDs or CDRs disc: tracks, time type of artwork I have, if any
link to track list, etc
links to offsite reviews and info about disc or show
special notes (I might move this part to the track list page as this page gets larger)

This table should answer almost any question you have about a disc. The track lists are complete. Remember to read the Rules Of The Road before contacting me about a trade.

Also, don't forget about the other lists:

Bob Dylan

1960-1964 | 1965-1969 | 1970-1974 | 1975-1979
1980-1984 | 1985-1989 | 1990-1994 | 1995-1999

NOTE: when the tracks on a disc span multiple years, the disc is listed under the most recent date. For example, GBS Take 2 is listed under 1990-1994 since the most recent track is from 1993.

This set is really for the completest. It's interesting material, only some of it Dylan, most of it traditional. It sounds as if it was taped in 1961...which I guess it should. The people are quiet, so there's not much in the way of party noise. It's got some hum and static to it at points, though.

"Probably the most interesting boot CD to ever surface, because it was unexpected and because the quality is so high. A complete one hour radio program in excellent quality! The conversation and the songs are each given individual track numbers so a CD player can be programmed to play it as is, just songs, or just conversation. Very nice touch indeed!"

Jack Nissenson, an early admirer of Dylan had the foresight to record this performance at the Finjan Club, Montreal, in July 1962.

A decent copy of the Finjan Club tape, complete on CD, the recording is continuous which gives the atmosphere of the club rather well. This one is strikingly better then other discs of the same material.

Ahhh, the music - this does for 1963 what "All Hallow's Eve" does for 1964, "Now Is the Time For Your Tears" [aka 1965 revisited disc 4] does for 1965 and "Guitars Kissing" does for 1966 - Dylan at his best in 1963 singing tunes that had not, and (mostly) would not, grace any of his official albums. Songs of wit, candor and insight that would have caused, had the LP been released, as much mixed-up confusion and study as the classics that followed. Taken from an original copy of the acetate and in sharp, cutting, full bodied and TRUE quality, the best to date of this material (save "Last Thoughts....", since officially released on TBS1-3)

DBTW says:

Absolutely essential show, 15 track concert (broadcast, was'nt it) previously available on Swingin'Pig "Now Ain't the Time" and cleaned-up Wanted Man release "Now is The Time For Your Tears." To my ears, quality is more natural sounding than on the Pig release, this disk is more akin to the sound on the Wanted Man, so much so that I'd say it is a clone. Nevertheless, if you don't get this box, do grab one of the 2 disks mentioned above. The definitive '65 acoustic Dylan, best quality available.

DBTW says:

Same exact set list as above show (disc 4), 15 tracks, but in barely listenable quality. More a curiosity piece, will probably not spin very often in your player due to the sound. Previously not available on disk, probably why it was included here.

I say:

I had to get it....it sounds like Dylan fell down a well and someone through the guitar and harp after him. Some crowd noise, very echoey, fades on at least a couple tracks. He played the same songs in 8 minutes less, so you can imagine that there is not much improvisation in this one...

...great performance previously available on Scorpio release "The Circus is in Town." I compared these for awhile trying to figure out which sounded better and could not really reach a definitive conclusion. The sound on here has a bit more hiss but appears more natural, while the "Circus" one is cleaner but perhaps a bit more tinny. If you ask 10 people, would probably be a 5-5 tie. Anyway, you need to have one or the other, if not a tape at least.

A friend notes:

This CD was previously released as Yesterday, and Possum Belly Overalls, but I don't think the track lists are exactly the same. The Seven Years CD has 4 songs it attributes to a May/June 1969 Nashville studio session and those versions are here, too. If anybody has this figured out, please let me know.

Some folks might disagree with the rating here. There's banter and stops and starts and the audio can vary when Bob gets closer to the mike. However, this is great music from a good film (see the director's cut, the studio butchered it and misplaced the music in the film). The point is, it might be a 3 across the board if I didn't have a special liking for these sessions.

DBTW says:

A re-release of sorts (original release was Spacematic's "Tell It Like It Is") of the classic 11/11/75 Waterbury soundboard but a more complete document of that night's proceedings. This initial offering from Blue Eyed Records contains all 13 trax originally found on "Tell It" plus 3 others - SimpleTwist/OhSister/ThisLandIsYour Land (the show is still missing the 2 openers- Masterpiece/ ItAintMeBabe .

Once again, the soundboard quality is mighty fine and very similar to the excellent "Tell It." The mix is a good one, with the highs and the lows flowing nicely together and neither one dominating. Everything is sharp and upfront, most importantly Bob's vocals. Any complaints about the quality here will come from those w/impossible-to-meet standards.

I say:

Simple Twist Of Fate, acoustic, breathtaking, if you have Tell It, you still want this disc...at least this track. IMO, there is no excuse for not releasing at least one of the live 1975 Simple Twists officially...see GBS 3 for the John Hammond one and Knight of The Hurricane for another good one.

Let's make this one short and sweet. This is by far the best audience recording of a RT show, far eclipsing the Toronto tracks available on "Flagging Down the EEs" and easily setting the standard for a 75/76 audience tape of Rolling Thunder, IMO.

DBTW Review
DBTW says:

"I imagine this is as good as it could get short of an official release. For fans of Rolling Thunder, this will not disappoint."

I might disagree with this. I thought the sound quality on what I received could have been better. On some tracks, it definitely dips below a 4. There also seem to be some poor fade-ins on a couple tracks but that could be from the movie itself. Also, there's a pop in Tangled Up In Blue...but when I receive the 11/21/75 show, I can sub in that version if it is better.

Finally, based on my reading of Krogsgaard (all I have is 1980's "Twenty Years Of Recording," the disc is not sequenced correctly, omits some Dylan tracks, and adds at least one non-Dylan track. Regardless, if you are a fan of the period, you can't pass up the disc. You might want to get some of the 1975 live shows first, though.

a Rolling Thunder Revue show...

DBTW says:

Once again and as always, his vocal phrasing and clear, deliberate enunciation on tracks such as BigGirlNow, Mozambique, One Too Many Mornings and the others mentioned above (hell, the entire show) are a joy to hear. I'm playing it as I write this and can't help but marvel at the singing and the sound.

Anyway, an excellent show and a nice companion piece to the several excellent '76 soundboards that are circulating.

DBTW says:

A voyeuristic look at the "loose as goose grease" atmosphere of a Rolling Thunder rehearsal, & funky as all get out!! Nice quality with the vocals clear, albeit just a bit in the background, and the music hitting a real groove on some interestingly arranged versions of Dylan tunes. Of particular note is the totally re-written and crazed version of Tangled Up In Blue - you gotta hear that one. Most tunes performed whole, with some fits and starts, and the groove never drags, coming through with a nice sort of otherwordly, Desire-like mystical feel. Dig it?? :-) One nice unreleased blues, The Sun Is Shining, is included, plus the original Spanish Rider demo of Seven Days. This one's a straight re-issue of the original Scorpio on Wild Wolf but with a great new front & back cover and, obviously, in the best circulating quality. Highly recommended.

I say:

The quality might range from 4 to 6 on this one...

In the hierarchy of '81 soundboards, I'd give this the nod over Houston, with Avignon and Oslo behind. Dylan's performance is so confident and full of zest that you find yourself shaking your head. Each and every song is played with gusto and the guitars and keyboards provide a full throttle thrust to the proceedings. Dylan is playful, animated and cocksure in his delivery. A truly monumental "ITS ALRIGHT MA" has to be heard to be believed. I won't spoil it by trying to describe it. A dynamite '81 show.

This is the same concert as "Stadiums Of The Dammed," with many preferring this version.

I say:

He's right...."It's Alright Ma" is fantastic...

(Note: Following review courtesy of The Famous Etiquette Book - PT)

"A previously uncirculated rehearsal tape supposedly from May '89. A curious beast in that it's not a typical NET rehearsal session. The backing band has a strong country flavor to it, there's a violin and a harmonica player in there and the drumming does not sound at all like C.Parker's rock drumming but has a jauntier, country feel to it. Three of the vocals are taken by a female vocalist (not Emmylou Harris as credited). It sounds suggestive of an "Oh Mercy" audition session, although on the other hand there does seem to be a hard core rockier element to it.

"Recording quality is excellent though not up to studio soundboard standards, suggesting it was probably recorded on a portable with some switching off and on between tracks." All in all a very enjoyable disk w/some fascinating moments.

The quality leaves nothing to be desired - every rasp, growl & purr (many) of THAT voice is captured in all its world weariness, every note and harp blow and guitar chord and steel pluck is upfront and balanced and separated and TRUE - go out and find this right now. There may be shows w/"better" set lists but I'll be damned if this ain't one of the finest performances I've ever heard.

DBTW says:

The second complete Japanese show from February past to make its way onto CD, and a good one at that. Nice quality and an excellent performance w/some rarely played tunes make for good listening in my book.

- but also -

A decent set but not essential.

A high-energy, charismatic & fun-filled show w/some of the best Bob vocals you'll ever hear and a thrilling, sympathetic band that plays the hell out of everything, and plays it well.

I say:

I really, really like this show! You need this one, folks...quality goes down a little on some of the filler, but just a little.

"The trader taped the show himself."

Well, crowd noise is a problem in this, but music comes out very crisp despite it. Bob's vocals seem very good. I prefer this set over the Nashville 1999 set from the same person. Encores, last 4 tracks, make up about a third of a disc really.

I prefer the New Orleans set from the same person. Crowd noise is less of a problem in this one, but music comes out a little more quiet. Bob's vocals seem ok. Encores, last 4 tracks, make up about a third of a disc really.

I recorded the Dayton show on minidisc and transferred it to cd over the weekend. The sound quality on <snip> is superb (I stood 20 feet from the stage in Dayton, dead center). And the performances were just astounding.

I say:

Crowd noise is a little bothersome, but this one edges out the New Orleans and Nashville I have.

The trader says:

I also recorded the Columbus show, but a whistling pig behind me really destroyed that recording. :-( Nonetheless, I pressed a "highlights" disc of the Columbus show using the 7 songs that he didn't play in Dayton, plus TUIB where he played harp. The whistling is thankfully not that bad on those selections. The sound quality on both recordings is superb (I stood 20 feet from the stage in Dayton, dead center). And the performances were just astounding.

I say:

Crowd noise is disturbing...apparently, from the setlist comments, one person was responsible for most of the disturbances...

Rating System

I use my own rating system on the items in my collection. While you may end up disagreeing with my ranking, please understand that I do take quite a bit of time in creating them. Each disc is evaluated to give three ratings: sound quality, performance, and the all-important overall rating. In a future version of the track listings, I might create ratings for each song and list them.

Remember, the performance component is very subjective...I'm biased towards songs I like for example.

Anyway, when you are viewing the discs, the ratings are in this format:

overall: sound quality / performance

For example, Guitars Kissing has the rating of:

1 (1 / 1)

while Western Electric has a rating of:

5.5 (6 / 5)

due to the so-so soundboard and average playing. Below, there are two charts which try to explain how I assign these numbers.

Sound Quality

1 Exceptional studio w/ post-production work or amzing soundboard
2 Exceptional studio or exceptional soundboard
3
Good soundboard or studio, exceptional audience w/ post-production work
4
Exceptional audience, above average soundboard or studio
5
Good audience, average soundboard or studio
6 Above average audience, below average soundboard or studio
7 Average audience, poor soundboard or studio
8 Below average audience
9 Poor audience
10 Collector or completist only

Performance

1 Perfect performance
2 Exceptional
3
Good
4
Above average
5
Average
6
Below average
7 Boos and hisses
8 Forced from stage
9 Riots
10 Never performed again
