PROFILE OF A BOXER

Boxers originated in Germany developed from the Molossian Hounds, which developed into the Bullenbeisser and Brabanters. Boxers developed from the Brabanter branch of the family. Brabanter refers to the area of the country which developed the breed. Later they were crossed with ancestors of the Mastiff and the Bulldog. They were used primarily for hunting, cart pulling and cattle management. The Boxer name came from their manner of play that resembles sparring.

Boxer’s are very intelligent as well as a loyal family dog, however, they do have a will of their own. They are very good natured, loving, accepting of people and always ready to play. They have a very high prey drive and a very high sense of curiosity when left to their own devices can get into all kinds of trouble. When considering a Boxer, obedience training should always be in the plan for a long-term happy relationship.

There are some potential health problems that can face a Boxer.

Hip Dysplasia: This affects many breeds and when looking to buy a puppy from a Breeder you should ask for proof that the parents of the puppies are OFA certified. This means they have been x-rayed and certified to be dysplasia free.

Bloat: Bloat is a life threatening disease of deep-chested dogs. It involves gastric torsion and must be treated immediately (See -Bloat A Survivor’s Story). There are several steps that can be taken to avoid this problem. First feed your dog at least twice a day rather than one big meal. Also a dog should be limited in his/her activity for one hour before eating and one to two hours afterwards.

Cancerous and/or benign tumors: Any time your dog is a lump or bump it should be checked by your veterinarian. Many times biopsies are done for diagnosis. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Boxers make wonderful pets and are happiest with an active family. There is no way a Boxer could be described as a couch potato. They do love life and activity and are full of love for their “family”.
