The Quigley Family
The John Quigley, Jr Family
John Quigley, Jr. was born in 1781 in Massachusetts. He was the son of John Quigley, Sr. and Anna Oliver. The exact birthdate and birthplace are unknown.
At the time of John Quigley, Jr.'s birth, James Quigley, his grandfather, was living in Worcester, Massachusetts. Robert Oliver, another grandfather, was living in Conway, Massachusetss. It is possible the John Quigley, Jr. was born in one of these two places.
At or about 1793, John Quigley, Jr. moved with his family to what is now Washington County, Ohio. John Quigley, Sr. and Robert Oliver lived a short distance apart there. Around 1796, George Corner, Sr. settled close to John and Anna Quigley, Sr. After a few years, George Corner, Jr. and his family moved onto a few acres of George Corner, Sr.'s land.
John Quigley, Jr. married Ellen Corner, the daughter of George Corner, Jr. and Ann Clark, in the winter of 1810.
In 1811, John Quigley, Jr and his wife's brother William Corner ventured into what is now Union Township in Morgan County, Ohio and built a cabin on their land. It is believed that Ellen Quigley gave Union Township its name.
John Quigley, Jr. served in the War of 1812 as a private in Capt. Charles Deval's company of Dragoons in Connell's Odd Battalion in the Ohio Militia. His service commenced on Oct. 20, 1812 and ended on Dec. 18, 1812. He was paid for his horse.
During John Quigley, Jr.'s service in the War of 1812, Ellen Corner Quigley moved in with her mother-in-law Anna Oliver Quigley. Eventually, the John Quigley, Jr. family returned to their place in Morgan County, Ohio.
On August 7, 1824, John Quigley, Jr. died. He was about 44 years old. He was buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Ellen Corner Quigley married Philip Warner on Aug. 12, 1830. This second husband is a mystery to all of us Quigley researchers. What happened to him is unknown. On March 12, 1835, Ellen Quigley Warner married Eli C. Smith formerly of Pennsylvania.
On March 8, 1872, Ellen Corner Quigley Warner Smith died in Morgan County, Ohio. She is buried with her third husband in the Wolf Creek Cemetery.
