... Thanks to cousin Cindy Friis, a little more of the puzzle of my line has been cleared up. Cindy found a letter from Elijah Matheny to Malinda Mozingo Irvin. Elijah was the brother of John Matheny who married Rosetta Mozingo - Malinda's sister. By marriage records from Augusta County, VA we know that George Mozingo was their father. A letter from George Mozingo in Cedar County, MO to his daughter Malinda Irvin confirms this parentage. The question has been was Reubin the son of George or possibly a nephew. The Elijah Matheny letter clears that up when he tells Malinda that his nephew talked to her brother Reubin in Saline County, MO in 1868. I finally know who Reubin's father was.

The next step is to find who was the father of George. George was born about 1782, he was a fifer in the Culpeper Militia formed in Woodville, VA during the War of 1812. I have the documentation for this. There were two George Mozingo in the same militia company. I have pored over the muster rolls for that company and in one roll the second George is listed as either Jr or Sr. The writing is so poor due to the age of the document, that I can't tell which. George Sr. would have been in his late 40s or early 50s in this time frame. That is still young enough for Militia duty, and he was in the Militia during the Revolution...

The fly in the ointment is that George Jr. is in the 1840 census in Rappahannock Co., VA and George is in the 1840 Polk County, MO census a month and a half later. Could the journey be made in that length of time? I don't know, possibly. Also in 1841 George Jr. was in a list of taxpayers in Rappahannock Co. Could he have had to pay taxes on some property still in Virginia or are they two different people. This is the last record of George Jr. that I have found in Virginia. In all the censuses of Culpepper and Rappahannock from 1810 through 1840, there are only 2 Georges listed. If George Jr. is not the one that went to Missouri, where is he? Also in the John Mozingo will of 1823, he names his grand daughter Mary the daughter of George Mozingo....

George Mozingo died in late 1856 or early 1857 in Andrew County, MO. His probate started in January 1857, I have the records from the courthouse in Savannah, MO. I got the bounty warrant number from that record. From that number I got the military records from the National Archives...

There is a girl named Ellen (Ella) Eliza that may be Martha's daughter but not George's daughter. We think that George had a wife before Martha because of some letters that have been found. George also says that she is Rubin's neice in a letter he wrote to Malinda. The Gannaway children are Eliza's by her first marriage to Woodson Gannaway. Ella Eliza is identified as George's daughter in some family tree research by her descendants. I think he was step father and Martha may have been married to a Mozingo previously although I don't know who...

We have not been able to find George in any Census records in VA, unless he is George Jr. who is in court (tax) records in VA after George moved to MO. But after 1841 I don't personally have any records of George JR. in VA. ...
