INDEX
wager11
Bessie was born in New Brunswick, but moved with her family to Chatham, Ontario, which is near Detroit, Michigan. Eventually the family moved to Bay City, Michigan. Bessie was very musical and rode her bicycle for miles through the country to give music lessons for 50 cents apiece. She met Roy Swaby at her home during a summer vacation. When she won a citywide voice competition, she was given an opportunity to study at the New England Conservatory in Boston, but chose to marry Roy instead. They had planned a honeymoon in Detroit, but while they were on the train, Roy realized he only had enough money to get to Saginaw. After a stillborn birth and the death of their second baby, Harry, the Swabys had two girls and a boy, who grew to adulthood. When both her parents died leaving behind two boys who still had not reached the age of majority (Ted and Harmon), she finished raising them along with her own children. Bessie continued to sing in the Grace Methodist Church choir. In her final years, she suffered dementia, but outlived her husband by five months.
