Flora showed an early aptitude for music, singing solos in church when she was three years old and learning the piano. She was an accomplished cellist, who graduated from Cass Technical High School with a degree in music when she was 16 and then attended the Detroit Conservatory during the "roaring" 1920s. Meanwhile, her younger sister Ada partook in the more spirited lifestyle dubbed "flapper." Flora sometimes used the German spelling of her name, "Schwabe," when giving cello recitals. She won second place in a national cello competition. After her marriage, she moved into the Wager family farm, adjusting to the more rural society of Waterford, Michigan. She purchased a Baldwin piano and worked out of the farm house as a piano teacher. After her husband's death, she continued to live on the farm with her sister-in-law, Etta, but after several years, decided to move to Sun City, Arizona. In 1972, the Wager family farm was sold, and the main part of the house moved to another property a mile away. Flora lived 25 years in Arizona playing organ for church and cello in the local symphony.
