Some public records spell her first name "Maud" (i.e., without the "e" on the end), but several of her books survive and were often inscribed "Maude I. Newell." Maude was an avid reader and a favorite story involved her parents, who hid a book she was reading at the bottom of a laundry basket. She was told to press the laundry before she could spend time reading again, and when she finished ironing the clothes in the basket, she discovered that her book had been placed under the clothes so that she would discover it after her chore was finished. She served as Treasurer of the City of East Lansing which required working out of an office at the local bank. When the bank was robbed one day, and its employees feared for their lives, Maude was the one who bravely walked over to a button on the floor which she pressed with her foot, summoning the police.
