Johnson Reed Newell was an only child and earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1927. Before that, he spent two years at Albion College, and his young cousins remember him teaching them the famous "Io triumphe" chant. Throughout his life, he was an avid reader of Jack London novels. He met his wife during High School and also in Sunday school. After college, Johnson, or "Jack" as he was better known, worked for Bell Telephone, but was laid off in 1937. Afterwards, he worked for a while as a salesman, but then opened a pet store called "The Pup Shop" in 1940 and sold it two years later. His home kennel specialized in Staffordshire Bull Terriers (a type of "pit bull"), which was a similar breed to the mixed breed of his childhood pet dog (named Dodifer). He returned to his job at Detroit Bell Telephone, staying there until his death, and died of a heart attack while working in the front yard of his home digging a ditch. His ongoing health problems related to diabetes and the medicine he was taking for it, could have also contributed to his heart problems. He is buried in Mt. Avon Cemetery, Rochester, Michigan.
