At the age of 4, his family moved to Ionia County to take over the farm of his grandfather, Harley B. Church. Verne started out his professional life while still in High School, at age 16, as a reporter for the local newspaper. He met his wife, who was five years his senior, while she was giving piano lessons to his sister. Cora also taught Verne violin and let him play in the Harker Family Band, which she directed. In 1899, there was a big freeze that ruined the family peach orchards, forcing his family out of the farming business. He and Cora then moved to Clarkston where he become editor of the Clarkston Register. He studied also pharmacy and worked as a druggist. In 1902, he began working for the federal government in meteorology and self-taught himself statistics to the level where he taught the subject at Michigan State University. He moved frequently, living in various parts of the country (Columbia, South Carolina; Toledo, Ohio; Chicago, Illinois; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Salt Lake City, Utah; Indianapolis, Indiana), although his life began and ended in Michigan. Wrote an extraordinary memoir of his life, mostly about his professional life and travels, but including excellent depictions of the times in which he lived. Was very distraught when his wife died and died himself seven months later. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing, Michigan.
