Make a Hanging Slate Tabletop Meditation Fountain
A second style has another elbow and slightly longer vertical pipe instead of the ending cap. This U-shaped structure holds drilled hanging slate, slightly slumped stained glass or etched glass, or a drilled ceramic tile. A third style has flexible copper refrigerator tubing bent in an incomplete circle, either capped or extending down into the fountain bowl. The slate is attached by a .5" or wider strip of copper sheet bolted through one hole in the slate (nut on one side, bolt on other). Whichever style you like, you are sure to enjoy the soft flowing water sound, the gentle swaying of the hanging piece, and the water patterns down the slate or glass. 1. Gather materials: b. short pieces of tubing for a snug fit between pump spout and copper pipe. Black tape for extra support. c. 2 lengths of 5/8" outer dia. copper pipe, 4" and 6"; copper elbow and end piece or cap. d. watertight bowl (drainage holes in this bowl sealed with E6000 glue). d. filler rocks for bracing pump and color. e. slate piece shaped with hammer. Find 12" x 12" slate tiles in hardware flooring department. f. 1/8" or smaller drill bit in electric drill g. copper wire or 2 key chains. 2. At the plumbing section of hardware stores, look for short copper pipes. Ask that the pipes be cut in 6" and 4" lengths. If this service is not available, you can get a pipe cutter, pictured. Tape the pipe for easier gripping by the cutting blade. Drill 6 holes .5" or less apart on the shorter pipe with the 1/8" drill bit. Tape short to long piece for stability when drilling. 3. Lay out the pieces for assembly: If the 6 holes are not exactly on a straight line, that is OK. Use 2 hanging slate pieces and overlap them at 2 holes so there are 3 rings and a wider slate that will catch all 6 of the water streams. Waterproof tape around the tubing helps strengthen the connection.
5. The triangle-shaped slate has 2 holes about .5" from the top, about 1.5" apart. We used a 1/8" masonry drill bit to make a hole large enough for the key chain. The flat-bottom tan piece also has 2 holes about .5" from the top for twisted copper wire rings.
6. Using key chains (coat with oil to minimize rusting) or copper wire rings, thread the slate on the horizontal copper pipe. We've braced the pump for this picture so it doesn't tip forward. In the fountain bowl, the pump needs to be similarly braced with weight on its back to counter the forward weight of the slate. Another rock leans against the upright copper tube. Suction cup feet on the pump help hold it steady also.
7. Set the pump on low, hold the copper-slate arrangement in place while you brace and prop with stones. Add water and plug in. Add decorative stones such as tumbled amethyst or luster gems for the water to hit. Add air plant (roots out of the water) or spider plant (roots in the water) for a touch of green The flat bottom slate produced either a sheet of water or 3
rivulets, depending on which way the water turned the slate on its
rings. A real kinesthetic treat!
