Following World War II, the UN took over as the succesor to the League of Nations. The Mandates Commission was replaced with the Trusteeship Council, and areas that had been known as mandates were now called trusts. Under the Mandate Commission, a mandate remained under the European power without ever really becoming independent. Under the Trusteeship Council, the administering nation was required to set a target date the trust's independence.
After becoming independent and joining the UN, many former colonies banned together for a campaign against colonialism. In this way, trusteeship made a big step to decolonization.
