MUSIC
Why Is New Brunswick Music
Cutting Edge? Stella Starr finds out.
|
|
New Brunswick has it's fair share of
big names in the music world. Bands like 'The Boiled Eggs', 'Les Culottes Rouge', 'Armpit Odour' and
'The Donegal Donuts' are to name but a few. But what makes them BIG name bands?
'It's the coffee" Serle Jowells of the band 'The Boiled Eggs' explains. "New Brunswick is the coffee capital
of North America, we are wired, hyper, we fiddle and twitch too much so obviously playing instruments is a way of
controlling our nerves!"
That may be so, but people don't usually show up and see a band unless it's good.
"Well here in New Brunswick it does not really matter whether a band is francophone or anglophone.
If there's accordians and violins they are gonna go mad for it!" Donald Leduc explains.
"Folk and new music is very important to NB folk, we have awful radio stations playing thirty year old junk twenty
four hours a day. The public don't know where to turn and this type of music is their salvation."
Cutting edge indeed.
