Hello, I am Charlene (Sumlin) Cross. I am the Apprenticeship
Consultant for Fort Bragg.
We are proud to be a part of the military community by providing an Apprenticeship Program to Fort Bragg soldiers which was started in 1992 when organizers John Wilson and Larry Creel from the Fort Bragg Army Education Center met with our officials at the North Carolina Department of Labor. The picture below shows Larry Creel (r of center) receiving the Outstanding Individual Contributing to Apprenticeship Award from Labor Commissioner Cherie K. Berry at the North Carolina Department of Labor Apprenticeship and Training Forum in May of 2001.
Our Central Office is in Raleigh which is pictured below:

In Fort Bragg's/Pope AFB's May 2003 Commencement booklet, we are proud that we were able to list 72 Fort Bragg/Pope AFB soldiers who had graduated in the North Carolina Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program. All 72 soldiers also received certification from the U.S. Department of Labor's Apprenticeship Program. Our Apprenticeship program covers over 100 MOS's in 87 different programs.
After completing your apprenticeship program, you will receive a North Carolina Journeyman's Certificate from the North Carolina Department of Labor and a Federal Journeyman's Certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor which will demonstrate a level of attainment in which you can perform duties of a highly paid tradesman. Both Certificates are recognized nationwide that you have achieved journeyman status. Both certificates are shown below:
If you are a soldier at Fort Bragg who has been awarded an apprenticeable MOS and who is currently performing the duties of this apprenticeable MOS, you are eligible to enroll in one of the apprenticeship program(s) for that MOS. Press here to view which Apprenticeship Programs your MOS is eligible for and to view the Work Processes for your program.
Click here for a list of the eligible MOS's.

The North Carolina Department of Labor hopes to expand the number of trades to other MOS's which are not listed here where we can serve more of the Army Community. Therefore we invite soldiers to click here to view some of the other trades which have already been created for other branches of the military and civilian community. If you feel that one of the trades is related to your MOS, please print out the information on your trade and discuss it with me so that you can possibly enroll without delay.
In today's business and government climate, having a license or certification can open doors for you. A license is required for most professions and for jobs that are subject to State or to other government regulations. Certification is voluntary but is frequently sought, because workers realize that certification can assist them in finding, keeping, and advancing in a job. In jobs from mechanics, installers and repairers to medical technicians to therapists to computer network engineers and Web Site Developers, and many, many others, certification plays a key role. Certification is becoming particularly critical in the information technology industry as employees contend with a shortage of skilled employees. Press here to view many of these licenses which you can receive by taking examinations at the Fort Bragg Education Center or type in http://www.dantes.doded.mil/dantes_web/certification/deph/pt3/index.htm.

A license is required for most professions and for jobs that are subject to State or to other government regulations. Certification is voluntary but is frequently sought, because workers realize that certification can assist them in finding, keeping, and advancing in a job. The Army offers Certification tests such as Automotive Service in Excellance Exams (ASE). In order to see various certification tests and other types of certification which the Army offers, press hereor type in https://www.cool.army.mil/search.htm.
Some of these examinations may be given for free at the Army Education Center to soldiers who are eligible. The new licensing and certification benefits allow the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to pay you, if you are eligible, for a test for a license or certification. You can receive reimbursement for approved licensing or certification tests you take on or after March 1, 2001 at the Education Center, Community College, or any approved private licensing site. You can receive up to $2,000 per test but not more than the actual cost of the test. You can receive benefits to retake a test you failed. VA will only pay for the cost of the test and not for other fees connected with obtaining a license or certification. In order to find out more about VA paying for your certification tests, press here.

Soldiers completing the Apprenticeship Program may also qualify for an Associate's Degree through Fayetteville Technical Community College after meeting the college's residency requirement. The residency requirement requires students to complete twenty-five percent of the program through FTCC classes which will include any core curriculum courses and any proficiency tests which the college may require. Approximately, seventy-five percent of the degree requirements in most cases can be satisfied by evidence that you have completed the apprenticeship program. The Apprenticeship Program satisifies the lab portion of your degree requirements.
Soldiers completing certain apprenticeship programs such as auto mechanics or cooking can achieve Associate's Degrees in auto mechanics or Food Service at FTCC.
All completed Apprenticeship Programs can lead to an Associate's Degree at FTCC such as the General Occupational Technology Program.
For more information on the Associate's Degree, contact Counseling Services at Fayetteville Technical Community College by calling (910) 678-8419.
You may also wish to visit the Fayetteville Technical Community College Home Page on the internet.
Previous Experience: Some soldiers who have been working their MOS for several years before entering the Apprenticeship Program can reduce the number of hours in half through Previous Experience. The Television-Cable Installer (26T, 31L) can receive 1000 hours of Previous Experience; the Illustrator (81E) can receive 2000 hours of Previous Experience; the Helicopter Mechanic can receive 3,000 hours of Previous Experience, and someone in an 8,000 hour trade such as Automobile Mechanic can receive as much as 4,000 hours of Previous Experience leaving him with only 30 months instead of 60 months to finish his program. Ask us at our Apprenticeship Office for details and for the form necessary to complete in order to receive Previous Experience Credit.
I feel apprenticeship is very important, because most of what we know is learned through real life experiences. Apprenticeship is a real life experience because we combine classroom training--what you have learned in your military schools (ie. AIT, BNCOC, and ANOC) with what on-the-job experience you gain while performing your day to day tasks on your job. Apprenticeship insures that you gain the proper training in all aspects of your job where you not only perform better in your military job (therefore having a better chance for advancement in the military), but you will be properly trained to take the well-paid highly skilled job in your field if you choose to take a civilian position.
Press Here to view Employment Opportunities in your Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Contact can assist you in obtaining a journeyman's wage job in the state of your choice if you decided to separate from the Army.
Soldiers who are temporarily assigned to another MOS and who therefore are unable to work on their current apprenticeship program can ask to be placed in suspense at their request. Soldiers who are reassigned to another apprenticeable MOS can request termination from their current program and can enroll into another apprenticeable trade. Soldiers can only be enrolled in one apprenticeship program at a time. Soldiers who have not requested suspense should keep contact with me at least every six months so that they are not dropped from the North Carolina program. Soldiers who enrolled in the program but leave Fort Bragg can mail me their materials to the following address:
Mrs. Charlene D. Sumlin-Cross
Apprenticeship and Training Bureau
P.O. Box 53634
Fayetteville, North Carolina 28305-3634
