The second edition of the FIFA Club World Championship brought basically two changes: The number of clubs and the format of the championship.
The Number of Clubs:
In the first edition, the number of participating clubs was 8. 6 confederations sent one club each. Host country and the Intercontinental game winner completed the club number to 8.
In the second edition, the number of Participating clubs is increased to 12. 5 confederations are participating with two clubs each, OFC confederation with 1 club. The Host country club makes the club number 12.
The Intercontinental game winner is excluded, although the winner (Boca Juniors) competes as a representative of CONMEBOL confederation.
Since the defending champion is not included, the last champion SC Corinthians Paulista São Paulo (Brazil) does not participate.
The Format:
In the first edition, eight clubs played in two groups. The group winners played for the championship and the group seconds played for the third place.
In the second edition, 12 clubs play in three groups.
The group winners and the best second placed club continue to the semi-finals.
Semi-final winners play for the championship and the losers play for the third place.
