UEFA ranks the nations each year from the point of Fair Play. The observers sent to each international event arranged by UEFA gives grades to borth parties in several topics.
Red and Yellow cards: Deducted from max 10 points. 1 for yellow, 3 for red, 3 for double yellow cards, 4 for yellow and red cards to each players. This number can go to a negative number.
Positive Play: Max 10, min 1 point.
Respect of opponents: Max 5, min 1 point.
Respect of the referee: Max 5, min 1 point.
Behaviour of team officials: Max 5, min 1 point.
Behaviour of the crowd: Max 5, min 1 point.
So each game may give a total of 40 points to each team. This number is divided into 40 and multiplied by 10 to get the final grade for each team.
In some cases the teams may not have enough crowd to evaluate for a team. In that cases total max grade can be 35 and the final grade is calculated by dividing the total by 35 and multiplying with 10.
After the grades of each game for both opponents are known, they are accumulated to their country's total. At the end of the year. Total of all grades are divided into the number of games included to get a Fair Play ratio for that country. The countries are ranked according to these final Fair Play ratios.
2001-2002 Fair Play rankings include all international competitions between the dates of June 1, 2001 and May 27, 2002.
UEFA awards the country who wins of the Fair Play competition with an extra entry to the UEFA Cup. That country sends the winner of their domestic Fair Play winners to the UEFA Cup, even if that team is being relegated in their own league.
In the same way UEFA also gives two more Fair Play entries to two more countries from the Fair Play competition. These two countries are chosen with a draw amonst the countries with an overall 8.000 or higher Fair Play average.
This year Norway won the competition. Two nations winning the draw were England and Czech Republic.
