PROSPECTS

Alex Escobar:
Alex Escobar, 21, is considered the top prospect in the Mets farm system. Although he did not play any games in 1999 due to a back and shoulder injury, the Mets still hope he is going to be a premier player for them by the year 2001. He is currently at AA, Binghamton. In his 1998 season at Capitol City, Escobar batted .310, hit 27 home runs and drove in 91 runs in 112 games. That shows exactly why Escobar is one of the most coveted prospects in the minor leagues and why the Mets feel he has the potential to be a big league star.

Jorge Toca:
Jorge Luis Toca, who claims to be 25 but is suspected to really be 29, spent most of his 1999 season in AA, Binghamton where he batted .308, hit 20 home runs and had 67 RBIs. He was promoted to AAA, Norfolk where he finished off the last 49 games of the season batting .335, hitting five home runs and driving in 29 runs. After John Olerud left the Mets, Toca was one of the candidates to be his successor at first base. But once Todd Zeile was signed his hope of playing in the majors during 2000 were over. Right now Jorge is in AAA Norfolk.

Timoniel Perez:
Many people have wondered why the Mets traded their future leadoff hitter Jason Tyner. But Timoniel Perez has emmerged as a better prospect then Tyner. Perez puts up better stats in all categories except for stolen bases. He is a much better defensive outfielder then Tyner. Perez also consistently bats around .350 which is much higher then Tyner and alse Perez has a higher on base percentage then Tyner has put up. The Mets hope to have Perez leading off for them by the 2001 season.

Grant Roberts:
Grant Roberts, in 1997, went 11-3 with a 2.36 earned run average. In 1998, Roberts only pitched 72 innings because of elbow surgery. But in 1999 he got 28 starts in both AA Binghamton and AAA Norfolk. At 6-3 weighing 205 pounds Roberts' throws a mi-90s fastball. He is very similar to Octavio Dotel but needs to improve his control and concentration on the mound before he can be a big time pitcher in the major leagues. Just like Jason Tyner, there is some speculation that he may be able to help the major league Mets around midseason 2000.
