SHEA STADIUM

New York attorney, William Alfred Shea, who Shea Stadium was named for, was a crucial part of the founding of the New York Mets. He was named chairman of the Baseball Commission in New York. National League officials agreed to let Shea expand to form the Mets in New York. It was planned that while the new stadium was being constructed the Mets would played in the Polo Grounds for one season.
The construction of Shea took twenty nine months to finish. Total expenses for Shea included $28.5 million and $4.5 million paid for overtime to the crew. Originally the stadium was to be named Flushing Meadows Park but because of William Shea's dedication to the Mets' cause the Mets' officials decided to name the facility Shea Stadium. The new ballpark was finally ready for Opening Day 1964.

Although Shea Stadium was not home to many of the Mets greatest moments in its early years, Shea was the setting for many of the most exciting, memorable and dramatic games in New York Mets history. Over fifty thousand fans were packed into Shea when the Mets won the World Series in 1969 for the first time in franchise history. In 1986, the miracle comeback of 1986 took place under the bright lights of Shea Stadium. Then the very next night Shea saw Jesse Orosco struck out the last of the Red Sox in the ninth inning as the Mets won the World Series for the second time in franchise history.
