Grizabella is the old cat we see often slinking on to the stage, only to be rejected by the others. As the story goes, she left the tribe to explore the outside world, knowing that she would never be allowed back in. Now, she is older, tired, and lonely, and only wishes to come back to her home. She expresses these feelings in the well-known song, "Memory". The kittens see Grizabella for what she is on the inside, and want to accept her back into the tribe without questions. Sillabub echos the old cat's feelings when she sings part of "Memory" and Victoria is the one who finally approches to touch her and officially accept her again. Her relationship to other cats in the tribe are not known, but some believe that she is the mother of perhaps Sillabub or Demeter. She could also be the daughter, sister, or mate of Old Deuteronomy or even Gus. |
