Demeter is the black and gold queen we see hanging around Bombalurina
and the other older females a lot. She is usually the first cat on stage--she
runs out and hisses as a car's headlights illuminate her for a moment.
The songs she is most memorable in are "Macavity", which she
sings with Bombalurina, and "Grizabella, The Glamour Cat". All
throughout she seems to be always on the watch and even a bit jumpy. We
learn later that Macavity is the source of
her fear. Demeter previously had a past with the mystery cat, but what
exactly happened to her, like Bombalurina, is not known. Most people make
up their own story. Demeter is seen reaching out to Grizabella
when she appears, but then at the last minute ducking away, as if ashamed
that she considered touching her. After the final Macavity scare, Demeter
can be seen in the spotlight with Munkustrap
in the London show, but with Alonzo in the Broadway
version. Nobody can really seem to decide who this chick belongs to. She
also appears to have a small crush on Mungojerrie
in some versions, and usually appears to despise Rum
Tum Tugger. Some fans belive that Demeter is Sillabub's
mother, with the father being either Macavity or Munkustrap. Others think
she is Sillabub's big sister along with Bombalurina. Demeter's name comes
from the Greek Goddess, who was responsible for crops and growing things.
