Old Deuteronomy is probably the most beloved cat in the junkyard. He is the leader of the Jellicles, even though he is getting on in years. He is also said to be the father or grandfather of quite a few of them. All the cats love him and treat him with respect. He, along with the kittens, reaches out to Grizabella and accepts her back into the tribe. With a little coaxing, Old Deuteronomy escorts her halfway up to the Heaviside Layer. Each Jellicle Ball, just like this one, he picks the cat that will make the trip up to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a new life. Along with this power, he is said to have some mystical powers, but they are not confirmed. He has no enemies, save Macavity, and everyone loves him dearly. During the Jellicle Ball, Macavity tries to take Old Deuteronomy, and would have succeded if it hadn't been for the persuasion and encouragment of Rum Tum Tugger and the magical powers of Mistoffelees.
