NAPA, Calif., April 29, 2002 - With more than 240 wineries, hundreds of restaurants, championship golf courses and world-class accommodations, the 34,000-acre Napa Valley has become one of the world’s most desirable areas to visit.
Most often compared to Italy’s Tuscany or the Bordeaux region of France, Napa Valley brings a decidedly European flavor to America. A majority of Napa Valley’s restaurants are, in fact, Italian, and the architecture of the area’s homes and wineries are modeled after European designs. Napa Valley staked a claim as America’s “Food and Wine Capital” when the Culinary Institute of America opened in 1995 at Greystone Cellars, the former Christian Brothers Winery. Chefs from all over the world now travel to Napa Valley to practice their craft.
Last year, Napa Valley became home to COPIA, a cultural center dedicated to the discovery, understanding and celebration of wine, food and the arts. Today’s visitors are focused on outdoor recreation when making travel plans, and this trend also puts Napa Valley in the center spotlight. The Valley has the distinction of being the most heavily traveled hot air balloon corridor in the entire world. The geothermal activity found in the northern end of the Valley has been attracting recreation seekers since Sam Brannon developed the mud baths of Calistoga in the early 1900s. A company bottling mineral water from this area has made the city’s name a household word. Opportunities for excellent lake fishing abound, and Lake Berryessa is a major destination for water sports. Visitors can explore the vineyards on foot, on horseback, or one of the increasingly popular bicycle tours.
The Napa Valley is easy to navigate, stretching only five miles across at its widest point and 25 miles from north to south. It is divided into vineyard regions called “Appellations,” and it has six different cities and towns, each with their own distinctive character. Just as the native Wappo Indians gave this valley the name “Napa” or “Valley of Plenty,” today’s Napa Valley is unabashed in its abundance and is assured to please every interest.
Evoking an elegance and sophistication of days past, Silverado Resort is a perfect home base for exploring the pleasures of Napa Valley. The resort is known for an atmosphere of gracious hospitality that inspires visitors to return again and again to this 1,200-acre destination retreat.
Built in the mid-1800’s, the white-pillared mansion housing the restaurant, lounge, registration area and several meeting rooms was designed by then-owner General John Miller and his wife. The structure incorporates the Italian and French architecture the Millers had admired during their travels abroad.
Guest accommodations are found in private cottage suites surrounding the main mansion as well as lining the fairways of Silverado’s two golf courses. All of Silverado’s accommodations are one-, two- or three- bedroom condominium units or junior suites. Each unit has its own tasteful decor, balcony or patio.
Amenities such as a full kitchen and dining room provide a “home away from home” atmosphere. A spacious living room with wood-burning fireplace adapts well for relaxing with a book, perusing meeting notes or hosting a social gathering. Each room features conveniences such as a coffee maker, refreshment bar, daily weekday newspaper, hair dryer, air conditioning, iron, ironing board, robes, radio/alarm with CD player, umbrellas and televisions with premium movie channels. Room service, valet laundry service, a full business center and a professional concierge staff are at the guest’s service for making dinner, recreation, spa and tour arrangements.
In addition to luxury accommodations, guests can take advantage of sumptuous meals prepared by an award-winning chef, two 18-hole golf courses, 17 tennis courts and a spectacular spa and fitness center. The Executive Conference Center can accommodate groups from five to 500. The conference center contains more than 15,000 square feet of indoor and 10,000 square feet of outdoor function space, dedicated banquet kitchen, full-service business center and on-site multimedia services.
