Reader Reviews for Super Mario RPG

NESS's Review

Ah Mario. No matter what console he's been on or what game he's starred he has the tendency to make the game a good one. He especially made this game one of the favorites of most RPGers.

The beginning starts with Princess Toadstool being captured once again by Bowser. And once again Mario rushes off the rescue her. The graphics for the intro was quite good for the time except for the massive pixels that Poo pointed out.

As Mario enters Bowser's Keep we get to see the normal in game graphics. The graphics were very good and were similar to the Donkey Kong Country graphics except now you could move in a 3-Demensional space. Then not too long after entering Bowser's keep you get in a battle.

The battles are actually very good considering the rather interactive nature of them. You have the basic commands at your use: Attack, Item, Special(similar to magic) and Defend and Run Away. The only different thing is that the commands are activated by the buttons on the controller. If you press the "A" button it brings up the Attack menu, "B" the Defense and Run Away, "X" the Item, and "Y" being the Special. The interactive part of the battle is the Timed Hits. A Timed Hit is a very innovative addition to the battle system. On an attack if you press the "A" button at the correct time the attack will be more powerful, i.e. Mario will slug an enemy then uppercut them, or swing a hammer then bring down on them again. Many of the Special attacks rely on your input, too. Such as, Mario's Super Jump attack. When you do the Super Jump, the amount of times Mario jumps on the enemy is based on your timing with the "Y" button to keep him going.

The characters in this RPG are a rather motley crew of a plumber, a princess, a King Koopa, a fruity fluffy prince, and a large doll possessed by a being from Star Road. Sounds kinda weird, huh. Well the plumber is obviously Mario, the princess is Toadstool, the........fluffy prince is Mallow, the large doll is Geno, and oddly enough, Bowser joins your lineup in this game. Although they may sound weird they are all quite powerful. You pick up the crybaby Mallow while on he is on an errand in Mushroom Kingdom. Toadstool sneaks away from the castle after you have safely returned her home. Geno joins you after you save his life in battle and Bowser "lets you join the Koopa Troop" for a while.

Super Mario RPG also has some neat little secrets and funny stuff. The part Poo mentions as "working off debts" is quite hilarious. If you stay at the hotel in Marrymore too long and do not have enough money to pay your debt you have to take on work as a bellhop and take customers to their rooms and HOPEFULLY get tipped. You can also buy a game similar to Space Invaders where you are a beetle trying to ward off bouncing Koopa shells. If you want a good laugh and an RPG that will entertain you I highly recommend this game.

Sephiroths's Review

This is the odd ball game of SNES. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad game. What I mean is that the graphics are so good, this game should be on N64. The characters are 3-D, along with everything else. This time, you don't just stomp goombas and clonk turtles to reach Bowser, you actually use weapons like arm guns and turtle shells to battle your way to the ultimate boss, Smithy. Plus, Bowser joins your team this time, which is a real treat from his brute. I very fine game indead. Mario will never be looked at the same again...
