HOMESTEAD NOW OPEN TO PUBLIC

For 15 years, Nancy Cullen envisioned a "family house," a place where her family could gather for special occasions and where the small community of Harrisville, Ohio could welcome house visitors. The dream became a reality recently, when Cullen moved back to Harrisville and opened the "Cullen Cottage."

In May of 2002, Cullen resigned from her position with Franklin County Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Columbus, and returned to her roots in Harrisville.

The decision was difficult for Cullen, who resisted the idea at first because she was unsure she could adapt to a small town lifestyle again. After her father died, Cullen's mother, Virginia, often spoke of how she wanted Cullen to have the house. In September 1998, Cullen's mother passed away and the family decided to put the house up for sale. After being unsuccessful in selling it, Cullen decided the time was right to make the purchase. She moved into the house in May of 2000.

Cullen's parents, James and Virginia, both now deceased, left behind a legacy of 11 children, 18 grandchildren and eight great-granchildren, with one due in December.

The Cullen homestead is located at 49358 Main Street. cullen's parents purchased it in 1956. According to Cullen, the house deed is dated 1902, but historical town records kept by John Morris said the house stood in the late 1860s. "This house is lot No. 1 and is the oldest house in Harrisville," she said. The original deed shows the purchase price of $1,500 by Cullen's parents.

According to Cullen, her family has strong ties and preparing the Cullen homestead was a collaborative effort. Family members all pitched in with the work. They gardened, made repairs and furnished the property.

"Work on the house has been a family project and all of the siblings have been working diligently toward creating the homestead into the Cullen Family House."

The house, therefore, took on a fresh new look, she said.

Also on the property is the "Cullen Cottage," which is rented out on a nightly, weekend, weekly and monthly basis.

"I felt that lodging was necessary in the area and that it would create a source of comfor for friends and family coming back to the area for weddings, funerals, alumni banquets, reunions, etc. The cottage has been quite successful and has increased within charm and value and has certainly benefited the community."

Cullen also wants to purchase additional property and has other visions for new businesses.

The cottage is completely furnished and sleeps four to five people comfortably. There are two bedrooms, a dining room, living room, furnished kitchen with stove and a grocery shopping service is also available. There is also a full bath, ceiling fans, room air conditioning and many other amenities. The cottage is just like a regula home for visitors.

According to Cullen, the cottage also has a line of birdhouses and feeders, flower boxes and a garden that will create beautiful and serene entertainment for hours.

The family also has many goals for the community's future. Some of these include a community flower garden with gazebo, with a memorial area for past residents as well as a gift shop, tea room and possible bed and breakfast.

The Cullen back porch is also open to visitors at all times. According to Cullen, it is a special place with a great view. The porch has a pop machine for the community and games are provided. All proceeds are donated to community needs.

The family also started a Harrisville Town Picnic in 1999. The picnic's purpose has been one way the family shows appreciation to the town. August 11 is the Fourth Annual Harrisville Town Picnic at 1 p.m. at Harrisville Community Hall. Individuals are asked to bring a covered dish, item for auction, pictures or any other items to share. Drinks and table service will be furnished.

An auction is also being planned for this year. Proceeds will go toward next year's expenses.

Cullen is also working on gathering pictures and information to compile the town's history. She is creating a web page for the town, which can be viewed at www.angelfire.com/oh5/harrisvilleohio.

Cullen said the pictures and history will be displayed in the garden and the gift shop when completed.

Cullen Cottage is close to many area attractions, such as Oglebay Park, Wheeling Downs, Jamboree USA, Centre Market, antique shops, Ohio Valley Mall, golfing, fishing, skiing, horseback riding, tours and more.

It is located on U.S. 250 between Bridgeport and Cadiz and is just two hours from Columbus and one hour from Pittsburgh.
