Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded by twenty-two dynamic women on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913. They were out to establish an organization that would promote academic achievement and provide the community with assistance to those in need. Delta was founded on three basic principles scholarship, public service, and sisterhood. The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C., March 1913. Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1929. The founders came together to form a sisterhood based on Christian principles that worked to extend the social role of a sorority into an organization whose goal was to improve the social, political, and economic climate of society. These ideas have withstood the test of time and are exemplified through the many programs Delta sponsors. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization.
